PS3 Hack

Postby Xray » Mar 20th, '10, 05:37

Has anyone here got their PS3's hacked or know any info on it?

I got a Japanese 60 gb PS3 and I'm thinking about hacking it. But I want to know what will the hack do and if I can play any dvd's region free on it. Does it cause the system to crash? Is it common for it to crash after you hack it? Need some help. Also what's the advantages of having a hacked PS3? and disadvantages?

First of all, if it's Japanese, it will be regional code 1 or 2.
You live in a region code 3 country.
I don't know about hacking, but I do know that the simplest thing for you to do is either purchase a region 3 PS3, or a region free DVD player if you want to break free from the shackles of regional coding.

Fuck hacking it. I'm going to install Linux and Fedora on it. And then download LinDVD which will allow me to play any dvd I want in any region. I don't want my PS3 to die just yet so this seems the best way. Why buy a new PS3 when there's programs to fix my problems. :smoking:

just out of curiosity, what is the purpose of them making DVD players in different "regions"?

So that the distributors of the film can regulate release dates, prices, availability, etc.

From Wikipedia:
There are many purposes that region coding can achieve, but the primary one is price discrimination, i.e., allowing the manufacturer to demand a higher or lower price depending on what the market will allow. There is great disparity among the regions of the world in how much a person is willing to pay for a DVD. Price discrimination is especially applicable to DVDs, as the marginal cost of selling one DVD is relatively small, allowing the seller a great deal of flexibility in pricing.

Another purpose is controlling release dates. One of the traditions of movie marketing that the advent of home video threatened is the practice of releasing a movie (to theaters) later in some countries than in others. Video tapes were essentially regional anyway, since video tape formats had to match those of the encoding system used by television stations in that particular region, such as NTSC and PAL. DVDs are less restricted in this sense, and region coding allows movie studios to better control the global release dates DVDs.

Looks like you've made up your mind, but it's probably a good idea that you decided against hacking it. From what I've heard, Sony really cracks down on that stuff, more than Microsoft. For what you wanted to do with it, you're definitely better off going with Linux.

a complete hack is still on progress by famous ipod hacker geo hotz who stated ps3 was the hardest machine he ever hacked, so you must wait.
hack has no use cuz can end up with you being sued, kicked out of psn, you ps3 hdd being locked, etc.
keep on playing like a real gamer. :coffee:

i can understand the release dates. but if somebody can get a cheaper dvd for a "different region" i don't see anything wrong with it if it's still the original dvd. sounds dumb to me.

SONY CRUSHED the dream and hope of a hacked ps3, by ps3 fans with it's 1st April update and removing the possiblity of other os installation.
how ever geohotz the famous IPOD hacker asked people to do not upgrade, cuz he will soon finish his work on ps3 hack.
but for almost doing anything in ps3 you need to update it to the latest version, so, i guess most of people updated their ps3! :coffee:
