New Nintendo system: Gimmick or Serious system

Postby Rollimeo » Jun 8th, '11, 09:10

This Year in E3 Nintendo brought out its new system named Wii U ( :facepalm ). The system is supposed to come out spring 2012Image
the system will have a new controller with a 6 inch touchscreen in the middle of the controller
Image
Here is a Demo of the new Sysem
The new console will also be able to use all the wii remotes and be backwards compatible with the wii

So what you guys think of the new system is it just a gimmick or is it actually gonna deliver games for the more passionate gamer? Is it to early for a new console generation since it seems like the ps3 has yet to hit its full potential? Are microsoft and sony gonna be dropping there new consoles soon to compete with nintendos new system

PS3 and Xbox don't have a need to drop a new console, because although the graphics and processing system of the new Wii are impressive, they're still slightly below the already aging systems on the market. It's not a terrible gimmick, and I think it's a much better console than the Wii itself (especially for people that enjoy golfing games like myself)...

No, it is not "slightly below" current consoles, it's considerably above them as more and more reports about its graphical capabilities start to show up.

The tech demos they showed alone look a generation above, and that Zelda real time demo looks better than anything I've seen on any current home console...... and it will likely be at a fluid 60fps in full 1080p, something that games nowadays dream to achieve.

I don't think it's a gimmick. Nintendo is now focusing on innovation in gameplay, as they did with the wii to some extent. I think that this is going to be a great addition to the way people play for sure. The applications for this type of tech can't even be fully anticipated yet. As for the type of games, it's looking like they are being more welcoming to developers that are targeting M rated players. I've heard of a few FPS games and the new Ninja Gaiden as well.

Pretty much. Every top dog developers seem to be on board, EA with top games like Battlefield 3, Warner with Batman, Ubisoft with Assassin's Creed.... just to name a few.

The Zelda game demonstration they showed looked absolutely fantastic:

Can't wait to see more of that.

It's more Innovative and looks like the first decent Nintendo console in ages but still kinda pointless, like it's cramming every kinda tech in a controller for the sake of it. It's the controller they're trying to hard with. Why add a screen to the controller, it may aswell be it's own system, only thing that saves it is switching from TV to controller screen, but then why buy it for that when it's supposed to be a home console. Yet to be convinced, despite nice graphics

You are comparing to a high end PC game, I was talking specifically about home consoles, and in that case, Zelda beats the living crap out of anything I've seen with a similar art style.

Then again, this is just a tech demo that's probably going to look even better than it already does when a full game comes out. There's always a Zelda tech demo for the new Nintendo consoles, and the final products have always looked miles better.

That being said, I still think that that Zelda demo looks better than The Witcher 2 in terms of lighting and animation, and I vastly prefer that art-style to Witcher's generic fantasy look.

microsoft will now be going extra hard on the new console.

but really any new PS3 or xbox before 2014 will be really killing this current generation which still has in it.

I can't see there being a new Playstation or a new Xbox before 2015, there is still plenty of life left in the current consoles yet.

Rumors suggest a new console to be announced in 2013. Sony promised 10 years of lifetime after all...

Yes, 2014 at the earliest for Microsoft and Sony in 2015. Games are already expensive as fuck to make with current technology. Starting to develop for next-gen would be a risk that not many developers want to get into this early.

Ubisoft is making a wii u exclusive Killer Freaks from outer space
if this game sells well and other companies start making wii u exclusives then nintendo's system will be the system to own for this next gen (assuming the ps4 and xbox 720 come out soon)

i think it has potential. and as far as the graphics issue, there is no guarantee that they will be better than PS3 and 360, but it does sport 1080p (that's what they claim at least). the demo they showed where the guy had boats shooting at him off screen but he can see them if he points the controller in directions other than at the tv is the closest we've gotten to having a world "around us" and not just what's on the tv. it has huge potential. but it all depends on how dedicated to the idea Nintendo can be. the wii was just a bunch of random controller shaking for the most part when it could have been more interesting than that.
