in the 1982 FIFA World Cup, Germany Asutria Algeria and Chile were drawn in the same group
The First Round resulted in an unexpected surprise, and Algeria beat West Germany 2-1 while Austria beat Chile 1-0 (back then a win was 2 pts)
The Second Round, Germany beat Chile 4-1 while Austria beat Algeria 2-0
and in the last Round (which was the last time the final group games were not at the same time)
Algeria beat Chile 3-2
so now Algeria have 4 points, Austria have 4 points, Germany had 2 and Chile had 0
Germany needed a win, and both Germany and Austria would qualify, so Austria let Germany beat the 1-0, and I know that it could've not been a fix, but ppl who watched that game, and FIFA I think, saw that it was obvious, the teams did not attack all game long, and no attempts at goal were taken apart from the early Germany goal
so in order for that not to happen again, FIFA has made a rule, that states that all the last round of group stage games will be played in the same time, to avoid match fixing :P
Edit: o!!! and Austria went on to be eliminated in the Second Group Stages (it had a weird format back then), while Germany reached the final only to lost to Italy
Same thing happened to Italy in 2004, when Denmark vs Sweden needed to finish 2-2 for both teams to go through and Italy to be eliminated. Guess what was the end result?
