The idea is that he's playing a game and killing people in a house but then he walks into his own room and it's happening in real life ( so the game is controlling a real-life person ) .. which means he's just killed his family downstairs ....

Maybe so, but that would be straight forward and obvious .. the real life game playing makes it surreal and confusing, plus you don't expect it and next time your playing a game, it's gonna make you think wether that girl your beating the crap out of isn't then gonna knock on your door later with a pre-prepared bitch slap for you.
