I think it's funny when people say stuff like "a crappy pic of me." They honestly don't think that the picture is bad they just have no confidence in the way they look and ultimately think that they're "ugly". It's human instinct to defend what little confidence you do have so therefore you blame the closest thing to you.

No, I don't think you're ugly, and no I'm not insulting you, I just babble on about these things.
