The 16-year-old, from Newry, Northern Ireland, posted an advert on Gumtree, alongside details about flat shares and second-hand furniture.

Under the heading “virginity for sale,” the girl, who has not been named, said her body was “available to the highest bidder”.

She is one of a growing number of women who have voluntarily put their virginity for sale to pay for their education, although it is believed she is the youngest so far.

She claimed she needed the money to put herself through art classes and university.

The former Catholic schoolgirl placed the advert just over a fortnight ago, and alleged she was immediately inundated with offers.

A reporter from Sunday Life, a tabloid newspaper, went undercover to respond to the advert, posing as a wealthy businessman.

He offered the girl £3,000, which she allegedly accepted before arranging the finer details of the transaction.

The newspaper claims she "barraged" the reporter with a string of text messages, including one where she described herself.

It read: "I’m 17 at the end of the month, but I look way older. I’m tallish, size 14-ish, size 36D breasts, long browny-blonde hair. I actually have three piercings.”

She then added: “I can basically do this any Saturday. Do you want me all night? What exactly is it you wish to do?

“And by the way, I need cash in hand before the actual sex. I’m not up for getting conned. And probably gonna drink a lot before or I’ll be shy, OK?”

The girl sent a photograph of her passport to prove her age and even drove up the bogus offer to £6,000, after claiming other businessmen had promised £5,000.

The reporter claimed to have tried to dissuade the teenager many times, before finally meeting her to finalise the arrangements.

Their 35 minute conversation was recorded on video.

She ordered a glass of water before explaining: “I used to get pocket money. It was about £10 a week, but I don’t get that any more.

“I used to have a job in a shop and I’m going for a job interview at another store, but I don’t really want that.”

She added that she needed the money to buy supplies for her art course, and also wanted to go to university.

The teenager insisted she had decided to trade her virginity for an education.

She tried to organise the rendezvous in a hotel, but added she had to be back home by 11pm.

After the reporter disclosed his identity to the girl in a phone call, she claimed the advert had been "a joke".

Last year Alina Percea, 18, from Romania, was so desperate to earn money to go to university she put her chastity up to the highest bidder.

In 2008 18-year-old US student in San Diego, Natalie Dylan, told the Howard Stern show she would have sex for the first time for $1 million to pay her college fees.

Italian model Raffella Fico, 20, also offered herself for sale through a magazine interview for one million euros.

In 2005 a Peruvian model, also 18, put herself up for sale to help pay her family's medical bills but ended up having second thoughts and turning down $1.5 million.

I'm sure that's a real issue for these women. Who cares, though? I mean really...

I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as the person as over 18 (which the main article subject wasn't) and they're not doing it for drugs or something like that. Beyond that, prostitution should indeed be legal, in my opinion. Let's be honest, women will sell these services, men will pay for it, but the only problem is that right now the market is regulated by violent pimps, and plagued by disease that comes with the black market.

If prostitution were legal, this type of thing could go on in a clean, healthy environment, and prostitutes wouldn't be controlled by abusive pimps. It would be a safer situation for both the client and the prostitute.

That being said, I'm not going to sell my manly ass for college expenses, as Pell grants cover all of them.
