WEST SUMMERLAND KEY, Fla., Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Authorities in the Florida Keys said a pair of 17-year-olds fled a juvenile diversion camp and stole a bright red fire department truck.
Monroe County sheriff's deputies said a councilor at Camp Sawyer on West Summerland Key called authorities at about 4 a.m. Monday and said campers Steven Barron and Joshua Ryan were missing from their tent, The Miami Herald reported Thursday.
The sheriff's office said a bright red Chevy truck belonging to the Big Pine Key Fire Department chief was noticed missing about four hours later and the vehicle was pulled over about 90 miles away from the camp at mile marker 125 of the Overseas Highway.
Deputies said the teenagers, who were wearing only their underwear, were arrested and charged with grand theft auto.
"I can remember a couple of police cars stolen, but this is the first firetruck I know of," sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin said.
