CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - A man was arrested Thursday after allegedly lying to police about being robbed when a police investigation uncovered that he'd given money away, and lied to avoid an argument with his spouse.

On Monday, Timothy Ray Sutton filed a police report claiming while unlocking his car in the parking lot of Veteran's Plaza a man pushed something hard against his back and demanded money, according to a news release from Officer Jim Knoll, spokesman for Clarksville Police.

Sutton told police he thought it was a gun, but never saw a gun, the release said.

Sutton provided officers a description of the robber and said $5 had been taken from him. Detective Larry Boren investigated the crime and found the information about the robbery was not true, the release said. Police believe Sutton had voluntarily given a homeless man $5 and lied about it to prevent an argument with his spouse about giving money away.

Sutton, 23, was charged with making a false report. He was booked in the Montgomery County Jail on a $1,000 bond.
