NEW YORK, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- A man dressed as the "Sesame Street" character, Elmo, was rude to tourists in New York when they tried to photograph him, the New York Daily News said.

The newspaper reported the character -- surly and dirty, nothing like the Elmo on the TV show -- swore at and jostled people who wouldn't give him money when they tried to photograph him Saturday.

"No picture. No picture. You have to tip Elmo. You have to tip Elmo or Elmo gets angry," the Elmo impersonator said, placing his paw over a tourist's camera lens.

"Elmo" grabbed the camera of Ken Ross, 32, a tourist from New Mexico, the newspaper reported.

"It's just a picture. Don't be rude, and don't touch me. Somebody should rap you," Ross said.

The Elmo imposter tried to take a Daily News photographer's camera, but then apologized.

"Look man, Elmo needs to make a living, too," he said.
