It was not a hunger pang, but rather the tip of a 5-inch knife embedded in the roll, said Richard Curtin, the woman's husband.
Curtin said he purchased the sandwich at the Subway at 1283 Beneva Road on Aug. 3 to take home to his wife, Kathleen, 54.
"She was just about to bite into it when she discovered the knife with her finger," he said. "She could have had a nasty cut and a trip to the emergency room."
The couple drove back to Subway, where they were offered a refund, a free meal and an explanation that the blade -- used to mark the rolls' lengths -- must have been accidentally baked in.
Now the couple want to ensure that no other customer receives a sub with a foreign object inside.
Curtin, 70, suggested that the sandwich makers have only one such knife, so that its disappearance would be obvious. Another option: Attach it to a string.
Mallorie Johnson, the Subway branch owner, said the employee who made the sandwich was fired, and others were instructed to be more observant.
The knife, which had a brown handle that blended with the color of the bread, has also been replaced by a light blue instrument, she said.
Subway executives were notified, and Johnson said she provided suggestions to prevent similar mistakes.
"It was absolutely unacceptable that the employees didn't notice that mistake," she said. "It's never happened before and I don't foresee it happening again."
The Curtins said they might report the incident to the Sarasota County Health Department; until there is a resolution, they are keeping their "knife sub" preserved in the freezer.
