SUITLAND, Md. (WUSA) - A pregnant woman, who was found after being severely slashed in Suitland, Maryland over the weekend, was apparently attacked by another woman who wanted the unborn baby for herself.
Describing the case as "Just bizarre", Prince George's County Police Spokesman Major Andy Ellis tells 9NEWS NOW that the woman arrested in the case had brought the victim from a D.C. womens' shelter to her apartment, and evidently said she wanted to adopt her baby.
On Monday, Police charged Veronica Delores Deramous, 40, in the case. Deramous was apprehended in Arlington and was being held there pending extradition to Prince George's County. Investigators were able to contact Deramous by phone and arranged to have her interviewed by police detectives at a police station in Arlington. Deramous is facing several charges including attempted murder, assault and unlawful imprisonment.
Ellis says Deramous approached the 29 year old woman at the Queen of Peace shelter -- a facility with programs for pregnant women, located on Wheeler Road in Southeast Washington --sometime last week and enticed the woman to go home to Suitland with her. Once they were at her apartment on Silver Park Drive in Suitland, police say Deramous tied up the pregnant woman with duct tape and held her prisoner there for several days.
Police say she apparently kept the pregnant woman hydrated and fed until sometime between Saturday and Sunday morning, when police say Deramous tried to cut the woman's unborn baby out of the womb with a utility knife.
Somehow, the expectant woman managed to escape on Sunday morning and knocked on other doors in the Suitland apartment complex, trying to get help. Police responded to the calls made by other residents and when the officers found the woman, police say her injuries were so severe that they did not think the woman or her unborn child would survive.
After emergency surgery was performed to deliver the child by C-section, it is hoped that both mother and child will recover. Police are not releasing the name of the woman but say she has named the baby girl Miracle Sky.
Police now say no one else is currently facing charges in the case. There had been initial reports of a man seen chasing the victim with a knife, when the incident was initially reported over the weekend.
