COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Center for Biological Diversity is sending out advance samples of condoms picturing endangered species on their packages as a Valentine's Day promotion illustrating the dangers of human overpopulation.

The prophylactics that arrived this week in the mail to selected media representatives are in thin cardboard boxes 4 inches long and 2.5 inches wide, each bearing the image of a particular species with a rhymed slogan.

"Wear a jimmy hat ... save the big cat," reads the cover of the jaguar condom.

"Cover your tweedle ... save the burying beetle," says the box for the American burying beetle.

"Wrap with care ... save the polar bear," says the polar bear condom box.

"Wear a condom now ... save the spotted owl," reads the slogan on that box, though it doesn't precisely rhyme.

The center, based in Tucson, says it is launch a campaign to have 3,000 volunteers distribute 100,000 condoms to "highlight how unsustainable human population growth is driving plants and animals extinct at an unprecedented rate."
