I first got into lucid dreaming when I first heard of astral projection. ( For those who dont know what AP is, its basically an out of body experience. Your "soul" is able to step outside of the body and you can see your self laying there, while you go off into this other place of existance..People talk about flying to the moon and people who have never been to the Taj Majal(sp?) describing the inside of it in great detail, very interesting to check out just off of the describing places you've never been correctly)
Anyways, somebody told me some ways to trigger yourself to ask if your dreaming or not while dreaming. You do things in your dream that you normally do IRL, so for about a year, everytime I lit up a cig I would look at a clock and ask myself if I was dreaming, pinch myself and try putting a finger through my palm. If your dreaming, and you do any of these things with the intention to see if your dreaming or not, you'll either feel no pain when you pinch yourself or your finger will go through your palm and you 'should' realize you are dreaming.
Took a year but it finally happened. Ive had 3 total in the past 2 months. They seem to be happening more since now I now what to look for in my dreams. And Ive had 2 different kinds of lucid dream.
The first 2, I realized I was dreaming then started running down the street screaming IM DREAMING IM DREAMING...Then started jumping into the air trying to fly. However, I can only get about 20-30 feet off the ground. This is a common problem with people flying in lucid dreams...Also, these dreams only lasted so long, 5-10 minutes...like a previous poster said, as soon as I get too excited I wake up.
(However I learned a way to prevent this, as soon as you feel your dream going away, rub your hands together fast, keep rubbing, and tell yourself your going to keep dreaming over and over)
The 3rd and most recent one I had it was like Sajn was saying...I wasnt completely in control of this one. In my previous 2 my dream just stopped and I started focusing on flying. This one, I knew I was dreaming the entire time and was telling other people they were dreaming, but I was kinda just along for the ride. Really the only thing I had control over was knowing I was dreaming. At one point I was getting chased by someone/something and I was screaming to myself to WAKE UP WAKE UP. I did wake up, but this dream wasnt like the last, it lasted a lot longer. Im assuming its because I wasnt completely in control. When I went back to sleep I kept lucid dreaming.
@GGGG - I dont think you would loose sleep or get less rest if you were lucid dreaming. When you sleep, your brain is still moving a million miles an hour. The difference between dreaming and lucid dreaming is you get to watch your dream more vividly and maybe make decisions conciously as to what you want to do. This includes flying, or going to the moon, or anything that physics will not allow you to do IRL. Its amazing. Also, its not like it happens everynightor you can trigger it whenever you want.
