I'm an extremely strong supporter of the gay community. I believe that it's not a choice, and even if it was, people have the right to love who they love. Who are we to judge? I've honestly never heard someone insulting a gay person using the words 'faggot' or 'gay' in my entire life. It's always been just words shot at someone who wasn't, or at least wasn't known to be.. When people learn to not take those words to heart (Especially when they weren't even part of the situation, like in your example), then maybe you'll find the progress you're looking for.
