Comics/Manga/Graphic Novels you read

Postby dead prez » Nov 25th, '11, 09:25

So yeah there really isn't any difference between all three other than Manga being Japanese comics and Graphic Novels being the words people who are too ashamed to admit that what they're reading is aimed at the same demographic as comics and manga are and refuse to accept the medium for what it is. Either way that's besides the point as there are obviously top notch comics and manga from both sides of the spectrum such Watchmen, Sandman, Phoenix, Nausicaa, Vagabond, Monster, etc.

One in particular that stood out is Berserk, I'm still reading it and it has horrible hiatuses both because the author is a lazy bastard and his publishers have horrible schedules which makes it seem like the author likes to take long breaks. To put it in perspective this series has been ongoing since 1990 and shows no signs of stopping, hell it probably isn't even halfway done as the author said he has a lot more chapters he'd like to pump out before the series' closure.

That however is probably the only glaring negative that this series has as it has gorgeous art and a great story, it also remains one of the most violent and disturbing manga out there without letting it overtake the manga and becoming a detraction. Hell the violence while plenty isn't gratuitous and is needed, only shallow fans follow it because of the violence alone, it's got a riveting story with fleshed out characters that you can't help but like and hate. Even the main antagonist who is possibly the most evil character ever in a story of any medium, can't help but be liked for how charismatic he is. Yeah I know I didn't give a good synopsis of it, but I'd rather not spoil it.

Oh and the Golden Age arc which is the main character's backstory has one of the best character developement in the medium, lot's of people tend to skip over the first three chapters and right into that arc. You won't miss much as the story starts in medias res, and you can easily read back those chapters after a certain point in the story. (You'll know once you get there)

This video give a pretty good indication of what the series is like, however it's very spoilerific and may give the false impression that it's nothing but gorn if you don't understand the context for the scenes. The song also fits the whole story and themes that it has.

Just dropping to say what's up man? lol. As for comics, while I love the idea on paper I never got around reading them because they're hardly available in here. And if they were, I'd be into some mainstream ish like Marvel's Spider-Man or the Punisher. I'd also read Batman.

Nothin doin good, I'm mostly stoppin by cause it's Thanksgiving break and will most likely return to being inactive on Monday. How've you been?

I've never been a fan of Superhero Comics, mostly because of the preconceived notions I have towards them, which is mostly a personal thing I need to get over. I'm sure there's some great ones like The Dark Knight Returns. I mostly read Manga though cause of how easy they are to read online, yeah I know I'm a cheap bastard. Once I can though I'll definitely buy the Berserk volumes, the author has earned me shelling out cash for his series, that and I'd like to own physical copies.

Too bad man, but do what you gotta do. I'm great as well, college is going excellent and I have plenty of free time. B-Real is having a show on Sunday so I'm looking forward to that.

Yeah, something tells me that Marvel may be the equivalent of Young Money or Transformers if you're really into comics, but I'm not sure how well I can appreciate and value the art so I'm going strictly with what I've liked as a kid.

And I don't think it's being cheap to read that online, it's just that I'd prefer a hard copy.

I only enjoyed Death Note, even though it went downhill later on.

OT: kareem Said, judging by your name, you watch OZ, right?

Yeah the manga really went downhill once L died, plus Near's a faggot. If they really wanted to show how evil the Death Note is they shoud have had Light die by his own hubris not by some third rate L wannabe.

If you are a fan of that type of psychological genre, give Monster a try. And yeah my name's based off the Oz character though regrettably I haven't gotten around to seeing much episodes, I just like the character.

I watched the first episode of Welcome to the NHK. Was interesting, the theme of the loneliness really struck with me. Might continue watching. Although, if he doesn't have a job then how does he pay for food, rent, etc.. ? Any difference between the show and the Manga?

As for Monster, I watched the anime along time ago and gave up on during episode 50s I think. It kept dragging this Johan thing until I just lost interest. The show had it's moments though, no doubt. I love this scene http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yreUNEGP3xM. I also like that fact it has little of that anime/Manga humor which I'm not a fan of at all.

I'll check out some other Naoki Urasawa stuff like 20 Century Boys.

I loved Welcome to the NHK and marathoned that show last summer, though each medium is supposedly vastly different from the other. The light novel is a lot darker and really goes into the character's heads exploring drugs, it has nothing to hold back, it's also a lot less funny almost completely devoid of humor. The manga's closer to the novel, but still retains many elements from the anime, I personally watched it though you could read it as well. I believe the girl main character is a lot more sarcastic than in the anime, watch the anime first and if you really like it read the manga cause I believe the manga excludes a small arc which I'd rather not spoil. Oh and he retains his lifestyle because his parents financially support him even though he's a shut in, the show actually did resonate with me on a personal level actually. Mind you I'm not like the main character at all, but I actually know people who are in a similar predicament to him except not as bad.

Yeah Monster's kinda slow, though I would have recommended the manga.

Even though Berserk is long as shit and suffers from terrible hiatuses I can't recommend it enough, though you might want to skip the first three chapters or at least 2/3 of the 3rd chapter at least until the main character's backstory is introduced. After the eclipse the story takes a small decline and isn't near it's peak, but it's still great and worth sticking with.

Currently all I read is the Walking Dead. I love that comic man. I used to read spider-man from the 90's, but stopped recently.
