When Albums Leak

Postby Slim Fiasco » Apr 15th, '12, 20:12

OK, so this year/summer two of my favorite artists will release albums that should be amazing (at least by my standards). I'm talking about Lupe's Food & Liquor 2 and Nas's Life Is Good. I'm planning to buy them, but it will take around 10 days for the CDs to arrive in my mail. And assuming the albums will leak like 10 days prior the release date, that's a gap of 20 days between me and most people hearing them. I won't have any troubles with waiting and being patient, because I want to have a more special experience for the first listen; but I feel that I will be missing the hype.

I remember when Recovery leaked, those two weeks or so, were better than the weeks after the release date. Everybody was discussing it, and the excitement was incredible. So what would you do, or have you done in such situation? Do you think the more special listening is worth missing the hype at its strongest or not?

That's a tough one, and quite interesting as well. Most people don't care about the more special experience, but I do.

Isn't there a way to get it sooner? Can't you buy it in a store instead of ordering it?

Nah, there are only 2 music stores in my city, and they never get new releases around the time they're actually released. This is due to the lower standards in my country, and CDs are actually considered expensive. To make a comparison, the minimal wage here is like 10 bucks per shift, while in the US I believe it's around 8 bucks per hour. That's not to say that we're a poor ass country, but some things are more expensive than others. The only way I can get it sooner is if I pay a faster delivery, but I think it'll increase the prize too much.

How does waiting for it make more special?

You can download it when it leaks and listen to the albums from beginning to end. Then you can buy it.

I don't think the hype for those albums will be as big as Recovery's, so the excitement won't be as big.

I download at the first opportunity because I have no patience, and then I buy it when it comes out.

I listen to it on youtube. I remember when I heard The Reunion on youtube and they did something to avoid copyright laws that made Eminem sound exactly like the MMLP era. I was on the bus, I turned it on and I started flipping the fuck out showing all my friends, and then I was kinda embarrassed to find out they didn't care once they popped back in their Coldplay (great band).

I like to unwrap the CD, hear it in the highest audio quality possible, and enjoy the physical booklet. Leaks are usually in a bad quality, and since I've been waiting for so long for these releases already, I might as well wait a little bit more.

True, and that's the main reason I have this dilemma :D

Sometimes the album might not be as good as you expected it to be, and if they're relatively 'expensive' or deemed expensive in your country, why not save yourself the money if it isn't necessary to spend. Right?

The excitement always stays for me though, cuz when I but it, I bump it in the car for the first time and love it.

Yeah, but when you're very excited about something, chances are you'll like it in the start. Remember how everyone loved Recovery when it dropped, but then all the hating begun?

It also depends on the singles, and how promising they are. I love Nasty and The Don, so the majority of that album should be up-par with those two songs. As for Lupe's LP, we'll see how the singles will turn out.
