How to get out of writers block?

Postby ShadysDisciple » Jun 29th, '12, 00:54

I've had writer's block for like 2 weeks now. Anyone got any tips to get rid of it?
I didn't know which section to put this in so I figured Backstage was my best bet.
But yeah, tips on how to get rid of writers block and get inspired again would be greatly appreciated. :flower:

This, I'd say, in addition to this, just live life man. It sounds incredibly cliche, but inspiration will hit from just living. If you don't write after a while you'll get inspiration and it will seem fresh. Sometimes being frustrated that you are blocked is even worse than the actual block.

Or, like stated, take a break. When I sucked and forced it during that block I was god awful. I took about a 3 week break, just lived and boom, inspiration hit. I was listening to fly away and Em saying how he got his confidence back. I made my track "Fly Away 2" and there ya go. People on this board said I was doing better again and progressing as a writer.

Also, once you get out of that block, take another break. Sounds stupid, but don't overuse that creativity quickly. It'll ruin it. Save some of it. Practice a few times a week with about 8 lines 3 times a week, then not write the rest of it, that's whats working for me. Then drop a full piece whenever your ready. But maybe something else will work for you. Anyway, just remember the two important things.

1) Taking a break > Forcing it. (Trust me, Experience here. Go look up my work)
2) Don't use up the creativity once you get it back. Practice but drop on occasion so you don't re-develop that block.

You know what? I'll give you a topic, write everything you can about it. Like take Pen as an example, just be random, like: My pen is hard on your pink lined pages.

Nahimean?

Have in mind that the first line is the most important. This is the same with writing essays, the hardest part is to actually start writing. The best way to come up with a first line is to start freestyling over a beat and wait for something random to hit you. Something that sounds good. You can also play some songs that you like and draw an idea or a rhyme from that song. Sometimes it takes a single word, and you trying to find a rhyme for it that creates an idea. Watching a movie, reading a book, or just seeing something random, can create that rhyme/idea.

When you have the first line, most of the job is done, after that the shit is like web and you just use what you have in the previous line. I'll write something random here and break down possibilities as I go along.

I'm a cool ass nerd, rocking Nike's and microphones

That's the first line. Now I see what rhymes with microphones and maybe something with the rest of the words, and I see how can I connect it with the idea of the first line. I have: bones, clones, thrones, owns, zones, loans, etc. If I chose bones I can write something like this:

I'm a cool ass nerd, rocking Nike's and microphones
Skilled at fighting, if you bite, I will break your bones

And then either expand on the same rhyme or do something else:

I'm a cool ass nerd, rocking Nike's and microphones
Skilled at fighting, if you bite, I will break your bones
I hate uncreative clones trying to mess with the throne
So if you enter my zone, I am getting your head blown

Then you can switch the rhymes and the idea, but it's easier because you already have something to work around with.

I hate uncreative clones trying to mess with the throne
So if you enter my zone, I am getting your head blown
Don't consider this a threat, consider it a damn promise
I kill everyone who fronts, even if it's one of my homies

So yeah, just keep in mind that the first line is the most important and then you shouldn't look at it as that big of a challenge. Also, the most important thing is to practice your flow and to put your rhymes on the snare. You can have the best lyrics but if you can't flow properly it won't matter that much. And you need your lines to fit the beat, so if you write them randomly, you probably won't be able to use them in the future. So, start by not focusing on quality, rather on structure, and once you learn how to flow better, you'll have more confidence and writing won't be a problem.

Check out the thread in my signature for more tips.

*it's not an absolute must to have the rhymes on the snares, but it's the easiest way to stay on beat.

When i had it I would either:

1. Just try to write anything, which never seemed to work.
2. Find some emotion that I was feeling the most and go with that, which often worked, even if not to have a great verse, helped cause I was getting shit off my chest.
3. Write the first line and work the technical aspects from there, like trying to rhyme insanely as much as possible, which gets your mind off the writers block cause I was worried about the rhymes specifically.
4. Just rhyme in my head. This helped a lot, cause as you see, experience and live shit as the day goes on rhymes come to you, and when that one hits you that is dope I'd run with it.

Hope I helped!

Don't write. There's no 'cure' for writer's block. I'd venture to say that writer's block only happens to people who are new to the craft, and that's because they stress about it. Lately, I'm not even sure writer's block is a real thing. If you are uninspired, it's your state of mind. It's how you think; just let it be or change it altogether. It took years for me to transition into a state where I'm constantly thinking of words / phrases / rhymes. And it took even longer to be able to shut that thought process off and turn it back on (granted, it takes about a week to turn it back on). The longer you write the more you realize that it's a process. It's a marathon, not a sprint <<< that's the best way I can describe it.

When I can't think of something, or I can't finish a song I started, I just stop. I'll stop right in the middle of a verse and come back to it later, the next day or even next week / month. That's not to say that I'm not writing other things during that time period. The point is, forcing yourself to write something only leads to frustration and sub-par pieces of work. Some of my best pieces come after not writing for 2-3 months.

Hope this helps.
