Almost never...as in, I've never even seen someone do it in person.
Not a bad idea, but it just isn't done much in the U.S. Cultural differences, I guess. Sort of how Europeans will be like "What? I can smoke weed without tobacco mixed in?". Plastic filters are nice though, and they keep the ends from wetting up.

@Blu, yeah, I've had a week that...well, defies explanation. I finally have some access again though so I'll try not to abandom you all again.
@bigray so you're talking more like some tips? Basically something non absorbant to keep the saliva from soaking in and transferring? Because I was thinking of some actual filters, like a cigarette or maybe the plastic Tar Block pieces. Might check those out man, they're not expensive, and they look kinda cool.
