lastnights intense sleep paralysis

Postby Elision » Aug 9th, '13, 08:32

I posted this on facebook, figured it was worth the share. I should note than Lyn is my girlfriend:

so, lastnight I had my first frightening episode(s) of sleep paralysis since I was a child. only this time it was (as far as I can tell) drug-induced. I haven't been able to sleep this week so I decided to take half a xanax around 11pm and play some video games. It's worth noting that i hadn't had a benzo in my system for months, so I really should have just taken a quarter.

Around 11:30 it starts to take a noticeable effect so i smoke a bit and then feed my sugar gliders. The moment I put the food in their cage I realized I had bit off way more than I could chew. I felt extremely weak and could hardly walk. so without washing up or getting out of my regular clothes, I stumbled over to my bed and passed out for about 3 hours. that's when lyn decided to join me and go to sleep as well. but the thing you need to know about lyn is that she fucking radiates. being in the same bed as her, regardless of how far apart we are, makes me sweat like crazy. this somehow woke me from my deep african slumber and I decided I wasn't gonna have it. so after a few minutes of trying to muster up the energy, I managed to pull myself up and zombie my way to the couch. I looked up at the clock and it was roughly 3:15am. This is when things got bad.

I remember lying down on the couch for a minute, then trying to reach over and turn on my lamp for a bit of light because i'm a pussy and like it when i sleep. however, I was never successful in doing so because my body simply locked up. i had gone into sleep paralysis with my eyes barely open. i was gasping for short bubbles of air while doing everything i could to keep my eyes from closing all the way (this is known to instantly lead to horrible dreams that take place where you left off, so it seems like reality, only your panicking mind is running the show). Luckily I managed to pull through that episode and slowly regain my motor functions, but it was far from over. I was so shaken by the incident that I just wanted to go outside and walk it off. unfortunately, while I had all the motivation to do so, my body simply would not move from the couch. I eventually found myself slipping between dreamstate and reality so seemlessly that differentiating the two became hopeless. at one point during the night i remember trying to yell for lyn to come help me but i just couldn't manage any type of cadence or voice. it sounded like a screaming whisper. it was horrible. the last thing I remember is waking up from one of the dreamstates and it being bright outside. lyn was up so I managed to move back to my bed and slept the rest of it off.

Holy shit. I've had bad sleep paralysis, but that sounds BAD. You should go see a doctor. Though if you don't, I have a couple of tips that might help next time you sleep.

When you feel it coming on, just keep trying to move. Don't close your eyes, don't waste your breath on saying anything. Just move. Even if you fall off whatever you sleep on, you'll probably jolt awake.

After such an episode, wake yourself up. Find a way to jumpstart your senses. Punch a wall, splash your face with water, shine a bright light in your face, read a scary story, bang your head on a table. Play a particularly intense game of Yu-Gi-Oh (that shit gets MAD intense, especially when you have like 100 life points left and that motherfucker just won't fucking let up)

Nah. As far as I know, I'm the only one in my family to have it.

Something of the sort has happened to me too, I hate the feeling of being so exhausted but being scared to fall asleep.

It can happen to anyone. Your brain essentially disconnects from your muscles during REM sleep to keep you from kicking around and waking up during your dreams. However what can happen is your brain telling your body that you're unconscious and asleep, when really you're still alert and here. Which is sleep paralysis.

Definitely. This is called the "W.I.L.D." method, and it's the only one that works for me if I want to force it. It's just one of several methods, however.

I prefer letting them come naturally though. They're more of a surprise/gift from the universe that way.

Not really sure what a doctor would do. I used to see a psychologist who works right down the road, but I mean I'm pretty sure I know what caused it. Just one of the many human glitches, we're still evolving :n:
