yes

i respected dre for such a long time, but he's a joke... 90% of the times he uses samples, the rest of the times he doesn't create the melody... all he does is drums.. and puts his name as the producer.. same with eminem, all he does is drums and the mix but atleast eminem credits jeff bass and the keyboard players while dre doesn't.

I didn't expect a serious discussion in a thread with a title like that  lol

but tash and maybe, I have to disagree with you... Dre is a pioneer, he pretty much invented a lot of different type of beats that we still hear nowadays, there are so many people that were inspired by him and that copied his style, if it wasn't for him, beats would sound totally different. Nobody knows how it would have been like without him, but he definately made a huge difference.

Now I do understand what you're talking about, about the samples and the musicians that he has, but that has to do with his composition skills, not his producing skills. The producer is the guy that is in charge of a track, he knows how a specific track should sound like and he does whatever he needs to do to make that track as good as possible. So by definition, a producer doesn't have to be a composer. Obviously, a producer needs to have musical knowledge, but they don't have to compose anything. It's like a movie director. They don't have to write their own scripts to direct a movie. Personally, and you will agree with me I'm sure, I'm more impressed by those who compose everything in their beats, but still, it's not the producer's job to compose.

But like I said, I do understand what you mean, and if you asked me, who can make the best beats right now, Dre wouldn't be in my top 15 list... I don't even think any mainstream producers would be in my top 15 lists. But I still respect Dr. Dre a lot, he's a real pioneer. He's just not that awesome genuis that some people might think he is, it's kinda like he can't compete with some of the new people that were inspired by him. "The students surpassed the master"

Are you sure? cause every albums that I have that include Dre-produced tracks, in the credits, his musicians are always credited.

your right about a producer and stuff.. but i never liked dre style, almost every song he's produced for eminem i've disliked.. on 2001, he had some incredible beats, what makes me dislike him, like before i didn't care too much if he sampled, cuz i mean it's part of the game, i've sampled quite a bit too.. but i dont respect dre as an artist or producer.. think about it he has people writing lyrics for him, he uses samples... that might not be important to others but to me it kinda does matter...

now i talked with maybe about this one time.. I respect dre as a musical talent.. he knows how to find talent, he knows what sound good, he knows what he wants, he's very creative with his beats and how he makes them... that's why i still have some what of a respect for him, but i dont respect him as much as let's say someone who composes everything, who writes their own lyrics, but create a bit worse tracks than him...

but this is a good convo, it might be good to start one in the debate section

Yeah, it's an interesting debate

I pretty much agree with you, but the complaints you have about him, you could say that about almost every mainstream producers, they all have keyboard/guitar/bass (etc...) players, they all sample once in a while etc... so it's pretty much impossible to judge what they actually did and/or created on a track. A mainstream producer has a production team, and he's the one that tells people what to do, they follow his vision. As far as what he creates, for some beats he might do everything alone, for other beats he might only do a "kick clap" drum pattern and he uses some melodies that he guitar player came up with etc... But that's the same for every mainstream producers, they all have people who work for them. So to say that >Dre< is a joke is unfair IMO. Especially since he's one of the pioneers in what he does and he created his own style that inspired many people.

So yeah, I mostly have respect for what he DID. What he DOES now, isn't very impressive to me, he's just doing his thing like every other producers, without being amazing or groundbreaking.

yea it seems so simplified now a days, i was just looking at a midi file for lollipop to try to learn from it... and i just can't believe how simple it is.. but it makes millions...

it's messed up, if u were to ask me for influences, i couldn't really name you one from the mainstream...
