From what I gather, the shooter placed bombs in his apartment, left the door unlocked and had something set to where music would start blaring very loudly at midnight, prompting a pissed-off neighbor and/or police to open the door, which would have caused a huge explosion. The explosion was part of an elaborate distraction to get all of the police over to his place so that he could have a lot of time to shoot more people. See, the police station is very close to the movie theater, so he needed something to at least lower the amount of cops nearby. The guy had about 6,000 rounds of ammunition, so he was ready to take out people in possibly all three movie showings.
For some reason, the music abruptly stopped after an hour, and the neighbor decided to not approach his apartment by then, which ruined the main part of his plan to get the cops away. Upon being arrested, the shooter told the cops his place was booby-trapped with bombs in the hope that he would be told that his apartment had already blown up. Nevertheless, it has been reported that the shooter seems very pleased with his actions. The only reason he stopped shooting is because his gun overheated, from what I've read.
As of now, the booby traps in his apartment are so complicated that the bomb squad is unsure of how to disarm them. I remember reading something about there being mortar rounds and nitroglycerin in jars as well as criss-crossed wires all around his apartment. It was never confirmed if he had roommates, even though it was a two-bedroom apartment. And it's not like the cops can get in the apartment to look around. I just drove by the apartment and it's not very secure on the street side. You can drive by it and look at the bomb squad and police just looking puzzled. Very sad scene.
