I really believe his confession to booby trapping his apartment was more tongue-in-cheek to let the cops know that it was him who blew up the apartment. He didn't know that the neighbor never opened the door, so he was anxious to let them know that both tragedies were his work. I'm sure he's feeling pissed that half of his plan failed because he didn't set the timer to stay on long enough or at least have a police scanner on him so he could hear the call for the bomb and be sure it went off. That's why he's not cooperating and now wants a lawyer. He's just mad.
