Bench press/work out question

Postby BigBoss » Jun 8th, '12, 19:41

For some reason my bench press is fucking horrible idk why, I'm strong and have muscle, but I just decant seem to do more than 45's with 10's on. Everything else, squat, dumb bells, all that are good, I just don't like bench.

Do pushups help towards that? If I do 50 pushups a night will my bench get better?

My instructor had a thing he did to improve benching, it was called the "Burn". You'd do 7 reps of 50%, 6 of 60%, 4 of 70% and then 3 of 80%. Then do your max once, if you can, and start back down. Without stopping, do 5 reps 80%, then 5 70%, then 5 60%, then 5 50%, then bar 10-15 times. It's a hell of a workout, and it'll take a while for you to be able to do the full workout in it's entirety. But it helped me increase my bench by about 50 pounds in 16 weeks. Just make sure you have a spot to do this with, it's impossible otherwise. I'm sure there's other ways to increase your bench, but this is what my guy taught me, and it worked for a lot of the people he helped.

It means you plateaued so you have to take a break from the bench for a week or two and do another workout in replace of that to confuse your muscles. The. When you come back to bench you work your way up again. You never want to get stuck doing the same routine over and over.

But I've been doing pushups/dumbells at my crib, I've been getting strong as fuck from that. I'm just naturally shitty at bench I think. I've never been good at it even though I'm strong. It's weird.

Yeah man, I guess push ups would help build upper body strength. I'd google exercises that work the core muscles used in benching. I'm not like a workout junky or anything, but I would guess that dumbell workouts would help too.

That's what I guess I have to do. I see people twice as small as me hitting twice as much as me on there, but on dumbells or other upper body machines I do better, pisses me off.

If that's the case, maybe its just technique that's throwing you off? From the sounds of it, the strength is there, so maybe its all in how you're lifting.

Am I reading this wrong, or do you bench press 65 lbs?

Two 45 plates = 90, two 10 plates = 20, that's 110, then the bar we use is 60, so that's 170 right there.

how many reps?

the trick is, add five lbs every couple of times you're in the gym whether you think you can put it up or not. and do as many reps as you can. it forces you to adjust and get stronger.

If you want to build your chest strength up, fuck bench press.

Do pushups and dumbbell flys, that's all you need. Pushups even help strengthen your entire upper body, as you probably know already.
