Shy vs. Quiet

Postby Slim Fiasco » Dec 26th, '12, 20:49

There's this thing that kinda annoys me. Often there are people who don't feel like talking or paying attention in certain situations i.e. they don't give a fuck. Sure, the reason for that can be lack of self-confidence or whatever, but it seems that almost always the latter is assumed. Like, me personally, I'm very talkative with certain people but I don't want to talk in some other social situations, and there are some people who take me for this shy dude, and it's like they don't even consider the option of me not liking to talk with them.

But it's not a personal thing as much as it is a general observation. I've seen plenty of teachers defining the quiet students as not confident whereas I know that many of my peers have simply not been interested. I also often withhold speaking in class because I don't think it's worth my effort rather than being "afraid" to speak.

Being conservative is not a bad thing. ""An closed mouth catches no flies"". I'm sure you must have heard of this. You should not base your behavior on others personal opinion. Doing that you're putting yourself in a psycological jeopardy.

Be adaptive according to the situation you're placed in, it avoids being slapped stupid labels. That's what I do in real life. I open my mouth according to the body language, vocalics and Oculesics shown by that person. It helps me in avoiding conflicts, miss-understanding, and other bull shit. I know what that other person seeks and act as if I don't give a fuck; hurts less.

I'm very talkative when I'm around people I know and am comfortable with but when I'm around new people I'm more "observant".

I'd compliment you using the iceberg metaphor but that ish has been getting overused so I'll just say - you're awesome. TR members are some low-key mothefruckers.

No need to compliment me anyway, since I have no idea what the iceberg metaphor is :sweating:

Story of my fucking life. It just seems as if their's always this huge contrast in my classes though, with the people that overly confident & attention-seeking, then just the lowkey ones that turn up because their told too. When I was younger my shyness and quietness definitely developed from having little confidence and self-esteem, but as I've grown older I just've realised how dumb some people my age are! I'm not that bothered if I'm not that talkative in classes anymore as I'm a completely different person infront of my friends, anyways. I'd rather just go to class and do the work I'm told to do and not really answer and questions. I just cringe at the thought of being the centre of attention.
And tbh, quiet people aren't exactly shy, most of the time they just don't wanna fucking talk to you!

I used to get insane bouts of depression and just go whole nights out without saying a word lmao

I used to be such a tool, but almost everyone is at that age.
