Maybe this will be the year that
Eminem smiles. The famously
glum rapper, who wears the
mantle of a tortured artist under
his hoodie and expresses it by
spitting out dark tales of
dysfunctional relationships, is
certain to be at the podium a few
times during the Grammy Awards
telecast on Sunday.
Sure, he’s won Grammys before,
but only in the rap categories. For
any artist with superstar
aspirations, the real honour comes
when you break out of your genre
and are recognized in any of the
top three categories: record of the
year, album of the year or song of
year.
This is a big year for Eminem
because he ’s up for all three of
these prestigious awards. In fact,
he ’s at the head of this year’s
Grammy pack with a total of 10
nominations for the music on his
landmark Recovery album.
What’s the fuss about? As the title
indicates, Recovery The Slim Shady
LP Marshall Mathers LP Two
Against Nature, a clear sign that
the Academy voters weren ’t
ready to admit that hardcore rap
was mainstream.
Over the past decade, Eminem has
continued to record, but he also
struggled with an addiction to
prescription medication and a
tumultuous relationship with his
former wife. When Recovery was
released last summer, it was seen
not only as a return to form, but
also a triumph over his personal
demons.
No question, the biggest hit from
Recovery Love the Way You Lie
Love the Way You Lie.
That song is in the running for both
record and song of the year, while
Recovery is up for album of the
year. Word from his inner circle has
it that Eminem is not expecting to
win any of the big ones, but that ’s
probably because he was burned
before and still holds a grudge
against the National Academy of
Recording Arts and Sciences, the
organization that hands out the
awards.
Will Eminem be the toast of this
year ’s Grammys? Let’s take a
closer look at the competition in
each of the top categories.
Record of the Year (Award goes
to the artist and producer,
recognizes a single track)
Nominees Nothin’ On You Love
the Way You Lie F–k You Empire
State of Mind Need You Now, Lady
Antebellum.
This will be a battle between two
anguished love songs that are not
as dissimilar as they sound. Despite
the giddy hook of Cee Lo ’s brush-
off in F–k You Love the Way You
Lie. While Cee Lo’s is a great pop
song, it has the whiff of a one-hit
wonder. Eminem, on the other
hand, should be rewarded, not
only because his is the most
compelling song of the bunch, but
also because it ’s a statement from
an artist who’s regained his
footing. The Academy loves stories
of survival.
Album of the Year (Award goes
to artist and producer, recognizes
complete album)
Nominees The Suburbs Recovery
Need You Now The Fame Monster
Teenage Dream, Katy Perry.
Remember when an album was a
carefully thought-out collection of
songs presented in a certain order?
The Academy voters do and
they ’re going to see that Lady
Gaga and Katy Perry are more
interested in making hit singles.
That leaves Eminem grappling with
Arcade Fire and Lady Antebellum.
The Montreal rockers and the
Nashville trio both made decent
albums, but it’s going to split the
vote between the rock people and
the country nation. My guess is
that Eminem will end up at the top
of the pile.
Song of the Year (Award goes to
the songwriter, recognizes one
song)
Nominees Beg Steal or Borrow F–
k You The House That Built Me
Love the Way You Lie Need You
Now, Dave Haywood, Josh Kear,
Charles Kelley and Hilary Scott,
songwriters (Lady Antebellum).
What a coup it would be for singer-
songwriters if Ray LaMontagne
won. Unfortunately, few people
outside the folk scene have heard
of the Massachusetts roots-rocker,
so voting is not likely to go his
way. It’s a miracle he was even
nominated. Realistically, it will be
another contest between Cee Lo
and Em. For sheer songwriting
ability, in recognition of the
infectious melody, killer hook and
the fact that it was the song of the
summer, the award should go to
Cee Lo.
