There's an assumption music is personal and autobiographical, this is why artists are called out for "lying" in their music when nobody cares if a writer or producer creates a fictional story(unless they call it fact beforehand). I remember after MMLP/Stan came out, a lot of reviewers called Stan a rare moment of honesty and praised it while quoting verses from Stan's letters LOL. And this is just how a lot of people view music. Unless you emphasize that it's a character with some gimmick people just assume all lyrics are the thoughts of the artist.

I don't think it even matters, though. People should be allowed to write songs where they vent their feelings. I understand at first listen if a song attacks someone like you, you can feel "attacked". But honestly, Em has taken shots at people "like me" and people I admire before in his music. I really don't give a shit, he's Slim Shady. He talks shit about everyone. It's like South Park, they mock everything so no one group feels targeted exclusively.
