i would say slim shady LP did that or Infinate. Eminem show got him accepted and respected universaly as a hip hop artist, but he got the respect as an MC from slim shady lp and his underground music. no one doubted his skills as a MC after infinite, and once he sorted the flow on slim shady LP id say is when he got respected as a MC
Well, if you're just talking about his skill to actually rhyme and put words together (which is what MC essentially is), then yes, I must agree. It was obvious he had the talent early on in Infinite.
But I don't think he gained respect for it until TES. That's the problem with Em, and it still is sorta going on today. We all know Em has the skill to put out great music; that is obviously clear. But the way he went about it up until the TES, some people thought he sounded too much like Nas or AZ (Inifnite), his music was too poppy (SSLP), or gimmick-y and just using the shock effect to his advantage (MMLP). I'm not saying those people were right in their beliefs... But until TES came out, a lot of people made excuses hindering him from being a good and respected rapper.
To me, TES was like Em saying, "I am Hip-Hop. You will respect me." And they did. That's when Em started getting thrown in GOAT discussions, whether it was just fans talking about it or a panel of serious journalists.
Very good point. If he never puts out TES he never gets into top 10 discussions, that album was him being the best and doing it without reason to disbelieve his credibility and skill. I guess that's why I chose that album and why it holds a 2 vote lead.
