Opinion: MMLP2 won't set any sales records

Postby ladelsofgravy » Oct 27th, '13, 10:13

Will MMLP2 sell well? Of course. If Eminem makes it, a lot of people will buy it. I doubt it will break a million during the first week. I'm expecting 550,000 units sold on week one.

Some history.

SSLP - My Name Is was strong lead single, and the album sold really well for a debut.
MMLP - The Real Slim Shady was a strong single. High sales.
TES - Without Me was a strong single. High sales.
Encore - Just Lose It wasn't so good, but he rode the buzz of his earlier albums.
Relapse - Worst lead singles. His weakest seller.
Recovery - Not Afraid and LTWYL were great lead singles. High sales.

With MMLP2 there are 3 singles, but none of the triumvirate are clear winners. They each have their checks and balance, but what Eminem really needed was a knockout punch.

Berzerk is easily my favorite of the three, but I doubt the public will respond to it nearly as well as I have. Rap God is for his hardcore fans only who eat that spiritual-miracle stuff up. And Survival is really confused (it's quite safe, yet not mainstream-friendly enough).

It seems like he tried to slice up a little something for everyone with three quite different singles, but none of them really hit hard. Because it feels like he made it court support from specific people rather than appeal to anybody (as his other strong singles have).

It will outsell Relapse and Relapse did like 650K or something like that. So 550K is most likely wrong. I stick by my numbers, 800K-1 million. It could do a million if The Monster makes any impact. It'll at least do 800K, I think you set your expectations far too low. This is EMINEM we are talking about, remember? He doesn't necessarily need big singles to sell.

He doesn't need a big single to sell, but he needs a big single to SELL.

Granted, 550 is low. But I'm doubting any more than 800k. I personally think, in terms of mainstream rap, Eminem has slowly been losing his appeal (with Recovery being a brief spike up). As a fan, I definitely feel the heat coming from him, but as an ordinary citizen I'm seeing his relevance slowly slip away.

The Monster could very well be a game-changer. I'm judging the album by the first 3 singles. If The Monster breaks the rock-paper-scissor standing of his singles, then yeah.

Who really cares about the sales... i just want a dope album, i don't care if the Believers don't like the album and they don't buy it... i just want that Em do this album for the ones that actually are buying it...

I honestly think Survival was a big mistake

he should've left that track be a bygone. It takes very important space from the album

But outside of this forum it's actually received well from people like casual fans. I don't think it's a mistake because the song is good.

I agree. I don`t really care about the sales. But hey, it`s nice to have his great sales for an argument.

He wanted to cut into COD Ghost's sales. Which makes sense. COD will easily sell 5+ million in it's first week (and Em would be really lucky to get 1/5 of that).

Survival is good for the casual fans, but not good for bringing the REALLY casual crowd in like LTWYL did.

I agree. Maybe he thought Survival would get big like Not Afraid, but it didn't. And this song has been out since August, I don't see how it will help sells at all... it's just taking the place of another song, a better one, as I am sure at least one of the bonus tracks will be better. The only logical reason for Survival to be on the album is if CoD wasn't willing to agree on the deal with Em if this song wasn't to be on the official tracklist.

unlike not afraid, survival is a typical functional rap song (aka chest-beating and some violence). not afraid, despite some corny lines, was introspective and was more confident than arrogant.

^Survival is the better one by far, but both are commercial type of songs. I don't think Survival didn't do well because of the lyrics, it was because of the sound being less appealing to the general audience for some reason. Maybe if Em did a chorus like on Not Afraid it would be different.

Recovery was like one of the biggest albums of 2010.
It made Em one of the biggest stars and relevant again.
3 singles were dominating the charts and getting crazy radio-play.
Em won over the teenagers ( new fans ) and his Facebook page exploded. It might have been a bit corny and sellout, but it worked. Recovery was the best selling album of 2010.

I am hyped about MMLP2 but the singles aren't doing nearly as good as the Recovery ones did.
The songs are better, but 800 k-- 1mil isn't realistic. He will match Recovery, tops.
Come guys, this is 2013, platinum in the first week, nawh, even though It would be cool.

If we are talking about first week sales, I don't see how MMLP2 can't do better than Recovery. The only song that was out before Recovery came out was Not Afraid (well, WBD it wasn't received well) and now we have three songs plus two videos. There is a CoD promotion as well. Soon, there will be live performances and interviews and The Monster is coming tomorrow, which is a potential massive hit. Plus, all the fans Em made with Recovery are still here, the Recovery buzz is not gone. In addition, Eminem is blonde again and the album is named MMLP2. Not to mention that Recovery leaked 2 weeks early. And given the fact that Relapse first week numbers were close to Recovery's, I'd say MMLP2 doing more than 700K is guaranteed. IMO, It will reach 1 mill.
