Strictly in terms of a dope hiphop album, I think with an improved track list Relapse could definitely compete against TES... also remember TES had Drips on it.

MMLP isn't a better hip-hop album. It's a better piece of art.

It's a total masterpiece.

But in terms of construction and... as a musical presentation, just as an album - musically and lyrically, The Eminem Show is head and shoulders above them all.

And I'm not talking generally either. I don't speak in general terms. I'm a hip-hop fan so I'm only ever speaking in hip-hop terms, with hip-hop. Relapse is more entertaining in some respects, it's fun to me because he's just rattling constant descriptive madness, which I love. And the rhyming and flows are pure eargasm...

But, The Eminem Show - the content and the execution, is still better. As a hip-hop album it means more. Relapse is just an excuse for Em to rhyme about crazy shit. Which is awesome, but that doesn't make it a better album. And, I don't consider "Drips" a bad track. I like "Drips". And, it totally fits the album. Where as "Crack a Bottle" and "Beautiful" do not, at all.

Right. It's not a bad track, but it's also not on the same level as other songs on the album like SFTM, 'Till I Collapse, Cleanin' Out My Closet, etc... So the album isn't as great as it could be. Every song on MMLP reached it's maximum potential, with a few absolutely perfect songs like Stan, Kim, Marshall Mathers, etc. That's what puts it above TES for me. Also, TES is undeniably better than Relapse, even with a tweaked track list -- but you don't think that it's at least comparable? I would never argue that Relapse>TES, just that they would be on par and close to the same level of Eminem album. While MMLP is above both of them and SSLP/Recovery/Encore would be below both of them.

Yeah but how many albums do you know where every track is on par?

There needs to be a contrast for the better to stand out. You're always going to have some tracks better than others. What's most important to me, after "is the track good or bad?" is "does the track fit the album?" and "Drips" absolutely fits the album. So it's not a failure.

I don't agree that every track on MMLP is perfect. Every track is good, but are you saying... "Under the Influence" is just as good as "Kill You"? or "The Real Slim Shady" just as good as "Stan"? I know you said each reaches its maximum potential but... I disagree there too. "Amityville" for example is ruined by a ridiculous Bizarre verse. It kind of fits there but, do you really think nobody else could of provided a better verse than him?

There's many elements of MMLP tracks that could be better.

Songs like "White America", "Square Dance" and "Till I Collapse" are far and above MMLP content in terms of consistent lyricism and artistic aim. Most MMLP tracks are just like freestyle verses tacked together with a basic hook. Which is fine and - the album itself, like I say, is a masterpiece. If I had to name his greatest achievement, it would be MMLP.

But as an album, as a coherent production, TES is an evolution and it's a step up.

And no I don't think they'd be comparable. Firstly probably because they're too different anyway. I think that... The Slim Shady LP and The Marshall Mathers LP for example could be compared because, although one is the provocation and the other the reaction: they're both in the same ball-park, they move in similar circles in their aims - social commentary, political satire etc.

But, The Eminem Show is a personal, introspective, theatrical, political, self-serious album with a rock-tinge and Relapse is a bizarro world, horrorcore, almost self-parody Shady universe album, with funky, bombastic production and... pure hip-hop.

So, I think you'd need to define on what terms you're comparing them. And even then it gets tricky. Because if you say 'lyrically', well... lyrically in what sense because he's rapping about totally different things in totally different styles so the lyricism is obviously going to be a lot different. It's almost a different art-form, due to context.

So I think the only logical or, as close to logical comparison which could be finalized is... how do they compare as a final-product ie. as an ALBUM. Is their end-effect comparable, which has the better overall finish. And I think that would EASILY go to The Eminem Show. The content is bigger, more socially conscious, braver (in terms of the way he tackled subjects), it's just a... more noteworthy album in every respect. Then the overall sound, the consistency... I don't think Relapse comes close to it. Even though I think Relapse, took things to new heights, rhythmically and flow-wise.

I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it.
Spent a million a track and went over my budget.
Now how in the fuck am I supposed to get out of debt?
I can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

After Reading Various Comments On Threads Claiming Relapse Is Better Than Recovery I Went Back And Revised It For Myself.. I Made A Relapse Playlist On My Itunes That I Personally Think Completes The Relapse Experience ;)

1 Dr. West (Greeeat Intro)
2 My Darling (It Was Obviously Sposed To Be The Opening Song As He Wakes Up Spits A Few Bars About His Position In The Game And Slim Shady Taking Him Back And The Fans Expecting A Come Back I Never Understood Why This Track Isn't On The Original Version..)
3 3 A.m. (Stating His Sick Fantasies Slim Shady Is Back)
4 Oh No (Should Have Definitely Made It!)
5 My Mom (It's The Closest To The Slim Shady Lp I'm Tired Of The Beat And Chorus But I Love The Song..)
6 Insane (Insanely genius reminiscent of tracks like "Brain Damage" or "My Fault"
7 Warning (Actually A Good Diss Track Funny How Nobody Heard From The Careys After That)
8 Bagpipes From Baghdad (I'm Considering Deleting It)
9 Hello (I'm Back)
10 Tonya
11 Same Song & Dance
12 Buffalo Bill (Continuing The Serial Killer Theme)
13 We Made You
14 Taking My Ball (Continuing The Happy Catchy Mood..)
15 Medicine Ball (Continuing The Celebrity Ridiculing)
16 Paul (Classic Belongs On Every Eminem Album - SSLP)
17 Music Box (Back To The Dark Serial Killer Concepts And incredible Multi Syllable Wordplays)
18 Stay Wide Awake
19 Hell Breaks Loose Feat. Dr. Dre (Upbeat The Doctor Is In The Building)
20 Old Times Sake Feat Dr. Dre (Dre And Slim Are Still Smoking P/Hot)
21 Must Be The Ganja (Continuing The Smoking Drug Theme Explaining The Following Sequence)
22 Mr. Mathers (Great Skit Very Lifelike!! Continues The Dream Feeling He Had Under Pharmaceuticals)
23 Deja Vu (Really Personal Great Track Marshall Fighting Demons Love The Chorus)
24 Beautiful (The Queen Sample Brings Back The TES Feeling A Lil Bit The First 2 Verses Are Really Relatable.. I Think The Chorus And Outro Is Too Cheesy Though..)
25 Steve Berman (Same As "Paul" Really Funny!)
26 Careful What You Wish For (2009 Eminem Off Drugs Version Of "The Way I Am)
27 Crack A Bottle Feat. Dr. Dre & 50 Cent (Shadys Back To Lighten Up The Mood And He Brought People With Him! Relapse Version Of "Encore")
28 Elevator (Not Much To Say Welcome To His World A Little Reflection On Proof)
29 Hit Me With your Best Shot Feat. D12 (Come On There Have To Be A D12 Joint On Every Eminem Album And It's Nice Knowing Theyr View On The Situation Leading Up To Relapse..)
30 Underground (The Intro Is Like The Last Track Of Great Em Cd's :D )

*"Forever" Didn't Make The Cut It's Written In The Recovery Phase :P
*"Drop The Bomb On Em" Didn't Make The Cut Due To The Fact I Dislike The Pointless Lyrics And The Jamaican Accent And Weird Beat Doesn't Belong Anywhere On Relapse

I Actually Really Like Relapse Now Especially This Playlist.. Certain Places He Gets Monotonous And Boring.. But Compared To The Musical Releases Of 2009 This Was By Far The Best One I Might Actually Prefer It Over Recovery..

if any tracks should be cut it would definitely be: "Forever" "Drop The Bomb On Em" "Crack A Bottle"
And if even more cuts were required "Bagpipes From Baghdad" probably "Same Song And Dance" "We Made You" And "Wide Awake"
then Beautiful should probably have been moved to Recovery but still definitely a great song and it shouldn't have stayed Unreleased..

IMO It Would Be A Mistake To Cut Off The Skits Seeing As They Belong On An Eminem Album..
with an altered tracklist theres no telling how we would have reacted one of the biggest arguments is always the accents and i'm sure without them the Cd would have been generally atleast 40% better received.. if thats a possible calculation.. i'm sure this will grow on people with time.. seeing as we already almost feel nostalgic hearing the leaks with accents..

My Mom is like, my 4th-5th favorite song off Beautiful, but the 4 songs ahead of it don't include Must Be The Ganja.

The 2nd and 3rd verses are just boring lol even though the first and the hook are amazing.
