Em beats jay z on here because of deilivery. Both have great written verses that would be tough to compare which one is better. Ems verses just have way more energy on them. Just listen to the hook and focus on eminems and jays delivery of it. Its easy this way because they are both saying the exact same thing. Its obvious to me that em is just more fired up and assertive with his voice on the hook. On the verses they use much the same tone that they did on the hook so I think you can extend it to that. Plus just listening to the verses separetly can tell you. Bottom line.. Em killed it and jay did really well.

How is "I had to hustle" a 5 syllable rhyme?

Sorry, I'm new to this and trying to learn rap better. :flower:
I wanted an album so rugged nobody could touch it.
Spent a million a track and went over my budget.
Now how in the fuck am I supposed to get out of debt?
I can't rap anymore, I just murdered the alphabet.

I had to = 3 syllables
hu-stle = 2 syllables

3 + 2 = 5 syllables ;)

I think he was asking what it rhymes with.

It's more of a 4 syllable rhyme.
"had to hustle" rhymes with "ashy knuckles"

Full line is "I had to hustle, my back to the wall, ashy knuckles". Start of his 2nd verse.

I don't care what he says, he had to be....and still is probably mad he got booted off that track.

The beat is great and anything with Eminem on it will sell.

Not that it matters, Royce just isn't commercial material. He had a great verse on the SSLP and it didn't do shit for him. 12 years later he's still trying to "blow" making Ep's with slim.

I like Jay's verse a little better. But Royce was still fire. Neither had shit on Shady though. He was in his prime.

I think a lot of Eminem's lyrics in this song actually go over some people's head.

For example that part when he says;
"Or is he a ladder? a gateway to escape,
media scapegoat, who they can be mad at today"

Looks completely simple and one-dimensional at first. In fact, it's a very intelligent, extended metaphor.

Like both a ladder and gateway can be used to allow someone to escape, a scapegoat is also used to allow someone to escape consequences, and or responsibility.

Eminem is saying the media's use of him was allowing those who were to blame (in this case parents) to escape responsibility, just so people had someone to be mad at.
It's a brilliant choice of words to paint a perfect metaphorical picture.

"See it's easy as cake, simple as whistlin' Dixie
While I'm waving a pistol at sixty Christians against me
Go to war with the Mormons, take a bath with the Catholics
In holy water - no wonder they try to hold me under longer"

Same goes for this passage.
We got the modified similes "as easy as cake, simple as whistlin' Dixie", which imply that Eminem's task is simple, followed by an anology of difficulty.
"while I'm waving a pistol at sixty Christians against me"
Well, it's obviously not easy as cake to defend yourself with one gun against sixty people attacking you.

He then uses another metaphor, which substitutes war for argument, to keep with the defend/attack similarity of the previous line, to jump to "go to war with the Mormons"

And then he goes on to form yet another metaphor, "take a bath with the Catholics, in holy water - no wonder they try to hold me under longer" which all together form ingenious and absolutely brilliant metaphor for religious persecution!
Such a complex mixed metaphor in only four lines, registered as completely comprehensible by most listeners.

And as much as I love Jay's verses, I can't find anything nearly as amazing as Eminem's writing. Eminem just killed him on this track and that's a fact. I am such a fucking Stan.

"Now now, that's when you start to stare at who's in the mirror
and see yourself as a kid again, and you get embarrassed
And I got nothing to do but make you look stupid as parents
You fuckin do-gooders - too bad you couldn't DO-GOOD at marriage!
"

These are the best lines in any song, they literally give me chills every time I hear them.
