Objectiviely, Relapase was rated just fine by the reviews. Em's rapping is still great but his last albums are painfully average, I can't even recognize the man who made The Marshall Mathers Lp.
Relapse was really innovative in flow and rhymes, it has been established. However, that doesn't mean anything towards the quality of the music. The accents destroyed the vocal side of the project and ruined the Dre beats that Eminem laced his voice into. In addition, the album didn't carry an overall theme and was very disorganized. It was about random acts of serial killing and a rehash of past Eminem topics, themes, and displays of skill. The beats weren't innovative, they were typical Dre beats which have not evolved much since 2001. Furthermore, the innovation in rhymes and flow sacrifice clarity, the direction of the album, the consistency of the music, and allows for plenty of filler lines that were forced for these so called "innovations." The cultural references are outdated, there are many filler songs, and overall it serves no purpose in his catolog. He thought it would be controversial like old times and he was wrong, which resulted in low sales for his standards and led to the extremely compromised, and arguably worse-than-Relapse-album, Recovery. Also, all story telling became extremely repetitive after the first 5 tracks.
