I am talking about relevance in a literal sense. Music has become formulaic and dumb.
Songs about fighting inner demons, love, emotion and biting back are emotionally enjoyable, but irrelevant due to their sheer volume of production. The moment a track like this is made (unless it is as stylistic as Kim) it gets lost in an ever expanding ocean of regurgitation.
It is very difficult for artists to maintain their initial relevance when they break through, and usually if they continue to adapt and evolve away from the radio their sales suffer.
So arguably staying in the pop sphere only maintains a superficial notion of relevance.
Both a political album or an album about Detroit would be relevant for Eminem to make, and further show that he can evolve past his first three albums (note: relapse had a different sound, but it really was meaningless)
