I agree with the OP, this could definitely be on that kind of form.

One thing I don't get, is people saying, 'I don't get the references.. I have to look them up and everything!'

So what?

It improves your knowledge. I'm not being a dick or anything, or calling you lazy at all, I just speak from experience. With the people that aren't Post Encore/Relapse/Recovery fans (nothing wrong with that), they'll all tell you how much Em contributed to their Hip Hop schooling. I mean, Em was the first rapper i'd ever given the time of day to, when I heard SSLP in 99'. Through a few years of listening to Em, I was exposed to rappers i'd never heard of. Big L, Royce, Biggie, Tupac, NWA, Beastie Boys, Run DMC, Dre, XZibit, Sticky Fingaz, Proof, Kuniva, Swifty, Pace One, Outlawz, Big Pun.. The list goes on.

Being a fan on someone means you want to understand EVERY SINGLE LINE.. Otherwise, why are you listening? The difference is, we listen to an artist with a brilliant knowledge and love of hip hop, old and new, fast and slow, bling bling and emotional. And we're lucky for that. So new guys, don't complain about not getting references, because most of us didn't get them when the original came out, but we did our research, and stand here today as better Hip Hop fans.

If he does it more through out the album, embrace that shit.

I was 11 when I first got into Em back in 99. He definitely played a part in exposing me and many others to different hop hop acts. I didn't check out Big L or even know who he was until that Patiently Waiting line. And he has grown to be my second favorite emcee behind Em.

But the fact remains, his references are getting more obscure and lesser known now. I seriously want to know how many people were up on Lakim Shabazz and JJ Fad before hearing Rap God.

You may think it's a good teaching lesson for his fans, but I see it as him desperately trying to prove he's a hip hop head. He did it on Yellow Brick Road too. He's done it quite a few times since then too. It just personally comes across to me like he's trying to show how extensive his hip hop knowledge is.

I guess I'd take it over lines about his penis, or how much he hates women. But still, I think at this point, we get it. We know he grew up on old school hip hop. We know he's a hip hop head. He has to find something else to write about.

I get what you're saying man, and I do agree to an extent.

But I don't think he can win in this situation.

If he talks on personal shit from the day, then he's washed up.

If he talks on drug shit of recent, then it's Recovery 2.

And if he went at everyone and anyone, he'd either come across as desperate, or he'd get in to loads of drama, drama he swore off in Like Toy Soliders and Not Afraid. He's too old for any drama.

He's down to- Concept, Shock, Hip Hop Head and a bit more 'I'm back better than ever!'.

I hope that there's a good mix of all those on MMLP2. And i'm hoping that the one reason that we've heard 2 Hip Hop Head ones and a 'I'm back better than ever!' one.. Is cos they do the best as promotion.

Hopefully The Monster will prove more conceptual than LTWYL, and we'll go on from there.

I'd be cool with a little bit of personal shit, but I think most people are done with his drug stuff. tbh, I'd be surprised if he follows any of what he said from Recovery, and with the drama line he already said stuff about loads of celebrities in 2 songs off mmlp2 ( Berzerk and RG, incase anyone thought I had heard the album.)

Yea someone else mentioned this on another forum - but it seems like he's going to address people that influences him with this album. In Berzerk he was giving props to Beasite Boys. In Rap God he mentioned a number of old school artists.

Yeah, I see what you're saying Ellen. But he hasn't truly 'gone at' anyone.

There's a Flocka line, which is debatable, plus Flocka doesn't kick off at anything anymore. So there's no harm in it.

And as far as the 'gay lookin' boy' stuff. He's left it so open, it could be at a number of people. Which is perfect, cos it gets people talking. I, for instance, thought of Macklemore, due to his 'look', the coat line on Berzerk, and his work in gay rights through music. However, others then came on like, 'It's Mac Miller, he mentioned Oi Vey and thumbs up!'

So I think his fun is now down to sublims that get people talking. He'd never speak on a relevant rapper again, imo.

Still dumbfounded at how the Wocka Flocka bar is questionable..

It's not even subliminal in my opinion.

I agree, mainly because of what WF said on the breakfast club about Em, probably a response to that.

It's debatable, cos it's Em.

With his mindset of not wanting it with rappers anymore (proper beef), there's as much chance of him going at Waka, and there is of him wanting to put in that bit of forced wordplay, and it fitting the rhyme scheme.
