The reviewers never have a clue about the genre, it's ridiculous - they based their opinions purely on the beats/content. I still dont understand why Kanye's album is getting ridiculous reviews - it's got good production but NOTHING else.
I like Recovery but it lacks replay value to me. Plus it sounds so unnatural/forced compared to Relapse.
I see it the other way actually, when I hear Relapse it felt like he was just doing what everybody expected him to do, Relapse felt like Jimmy Iovine came in and said "Controversy sells marshall, diss some more pop stars and rap about murder or your fired"......... the whole album kinda had this "Why am I still doing this" vibe to it, even in his interviews he seemed un-intrested as fuck last year........
He recorded shit loads of tracks with Dre in 2008 after he got sober, before an album was even decided on, so I doubt he was forced to by Jimmy. We Made You obviously was but you could say that about his first 4 albums as well. It has it's desperate moments, without doubt but it seemed like he wanted to make it - his flows and rhymes just felt like Em. Not as good as prime-Em but felt natural.
He decided on the style of Recovery mainly due to the fans moaning about an accent. I also remember shit loads of rumours a few months after Relapse came out that Interscope had told Em that he needed to make more tracks like Beautiful (ie emotional) - this was before it was announced he'd scrapped Relapse 2. Might not be true but seems like a weird coincidence.
Not Afraid is one of the most un-Eminem like songs I've heard from him when he wasn't addicted.
At first I didn't think I would agree with you on this one....but your right. Recovery was a return-to-form thematically and musically to me....but did sound extremely forced at times. I agree...Relapse was a lot more natural in a sense. While I don't like it nearly as much as Recovery....i'm gonna have to agree with you there,

youve realized what most of us realized the first day.
