Good point, but I think sales- all in all- are as good an indicator as any, plus it's one of the very few non-subjective, measurable factors we've got.
PS I mean sales as in >100/150 million records

I agree that sales, in some cases, may be indicative of talent but my only point is that sales are also sometimes the result of other factors including resources, connections, the setting and climate in which you are exhibiting your art, the time period, and the background of the artist. I know this may be an unpopular opinion but Eminem was HIGHLY marketable to middle/upper class demographics because his content does not necessarily appeal to a lifestyle associated with lower class people (the colloquially understood "hood culture"). In other words, his content was easy to relate to and associate with on a massive scale and no doubt, Interscope/Aftermath took full advantage of this. One cannot argue that this also played a role into his massive sales figures.
Historically, the majority of record sales come from the middle/upper class demographics and SSLP goes 4x platinum, mmlp - diamond, TES- diamond. Even the curtain call greatest hits went 2x platinum as did the Re-Up. His sales figures, even today, are still going strong as the MMLP2 is about to go 2x platinum in an economic climate where piracy is more popular than purchasing music. This also explains why 50 Cent, out the gate, has MASSIVE sales figures - he was backed and pushed by Eminem, Shady Records, Dre, and Aftermath. He then appealed to the demographics from which the most record sales come from. 50 Cent is not on the same level as Eminem from an artistic standpoint yet his debut studio album outsold SSLP, Encore, Relapse, Recovery, and so far MMLP2 - that almost his entire discography bar mmlp and TES.
All i'm saying that there are many factors that contribute to massive sales figures for an artist.
because his content
does not necessarily appeal to a
lifestyle associated with lower class
people
