Which Eminem songs will still be popular in 30 years?

Postby Rindain1 » Jan 13th, '11, 09:36

Which of his songs will stand the test of time? Which of his songs are timeless? Which will be remembered by not just Em stans, but casual fans and even those who only own an album or two?

I'm not counting songs where he is featured (Forgot About Dre, Renegade, etc)

First I'll list my 100% sure classics, then good bets, then some wildcards.

100% sure classics (remembered by general public):

Stan arguably the Em song that has had the biggest influence on hip hop; coined the term 'stan', the perf with Elton, etc.
Lose Yourself Duh. His most famous track by a good margin. A crossover song that's not jokey and can be played in stadiums. The best bet to be Em's "Let It Be".
The Real Slim Shady The most famous and popular of his 'funny' 1st singles, and the chorus is mind blowingly catchy and memorable. Even though it dates itself w/ celeb refs it's a hugely important song in his career. And it's chorus is still referenced frequently

goods bets:

Guilty Conscience brilliant concept and video, plus Dre's presence
The Way I Am Amazing emotional song, raw, incredible rhyme scheme/flow
Criminal controversy, humor, satire, amazing lyrically
Kill You that chorus is unforgettable & it's also controversial
Kim So original, controversial, and tells a huge amount about their relationship
Til I Collapse This song has recently cemented its status as classic through the video game ads, MMA stuff, etc). Highest selling track now from TES. And it's the 2nd best "pump up" song of Em's career.
Cleaning Out my Closet An integral part of Em's personal story
When I'm Gone this is blowing up in Youtube views. A new generation loves it even though it's 5 yrs old. Great personal song that tells a part of his lifestory
Not Afraid Amazing song about standing up for yourself in the face of adversity. Also a huge song in the context of Em's life story. Also insanely popular.
Space Bound Everyone loves this song. People (girls especially) who don't even have Recovery know about this song.

Wildcards:

Sing for the Moment? I'm unsure about this one - it's an amazing song, but doesn't seem to be gaining as much traction as the other songs on this list.
Superman? Yep, I think this song might gain in popularity. It's a great song to get pumped to before going out to try to score with the bitches. And it doesn't really date itself.
Love the way you Lie? Not sure this will stand the test of time since most #1 singles these days fade into obscurity and you never hear them on the radio again, but this was just so huge, had a great video, and is about a really relatable topic
Going Through Changes/Almost Famous/Cinderella Man? I have a feeling one or more of these will become famous. GTC is amazing flowwise (esp the 3rd verse) and tells the story of Em's low point. AF is another great pump up song and is just about perfect. CM is selling great on iTunes, even higher than Space Bound.
Without Me? Not as popular as TRSS was upon release, but huge nevertheless. Great song and has a shot at future popularity.

What do y'all think?

Without Me should definitely be up there. Was a major milestone with a great point delivered very humorously. He also seamlessly changes between like 5 different crazy ass flows on the track.

My Name is, RSS, and Without Me will be like time capsules in 30 years. You could listen to those and hear about some celebs who were relevant in the 90s/00s.

Stan, Lose yourself and kim.

Stan: It is his masterpiece. His most critically acclaimed track.

Lose Yourself: The most successful rap song. First rap song to win an oscar.

Kim: One of the most controversial songs of all time.

Very true..I like that he still performs them. At first I thought it was kind of awkward when he'd spit the celebrity lines since some of the audience were surely too young to remember those people, but they're catchy as shit and just great popular songs.

And I think that Lose Yourself, Stan, and The Real Slim Shady are on an entirely different level - they are known to people who've never listened to an Em record, people in their 60s, etc.

Newspaper articles make puns off the TRSS chorus all the time, Stan is legendary for many reasons, and Lose Yourself is arguably the most popular song of the decade.

TRSS, Stan & Lose Yourself are definitely up there like you mentioned. The Way I Am & Cleaning Out My Closet seem to be the next most popular ones. I think out of his 2010 songs only Not Afraid will withstand the test of time, LTYL will likely fade away once all these award shows shut the fuck up about it like Lady Gaga in 09. Other songs worth mentioning (in terms of popularity not personal opinion) are Till I Collapse, Mockingbird, Like Toy Soldiers & Beautiful.
Sing For The Moment, My Name Is & Without Me are greatly underrated by the general public which is a fucking shame because they're better than a lot of his more well known songs. SSLP seems to be underrated entirely by the masses & even placed under Encore :shakehead: .

I think for most of us, a lot of his classics will still be remembered in many years to come. But for the general public, they'll probably would only remember Lose Yourself, Stan, LTWYL; those that were successful commercially.

It's interesting though, since Stan wasn't a chart/radio monster judging by the Billboard history...it gained it's popularity mainly through word of mouth, the Grammy performance, magazine/internet hype, and now from the word "stan" used to describe any obsessive fan.

all non-singles are out.

Songs that people (the general public) will remember from Eminem obviously are Stan, Lose Yourself, probably Not Afraid. That's all really. They all mark an important turn in Eminem's career, Stan marked his status as blowing up superstar, Lose Yourself is his biggest hit & it's from his movie and declared he's a serious artist, Not Afraid marked his "comeback".

This spark an interesting argument, I was thinking the other day what song can Eminem still perform when he's 50 and a large part of his discography are inappropriated, especially songs from his earlier years.

Yeah it's funny cos I always thought Stan was a massive hit on the charts before realising it did pretty badly, which I still am not sure as to why...

The chart 10 years ago were driven way different, it's all based on radio play since there's no digital sales, I guess Stan is too long for radio, but then again MTV was the most relevant thing in music back then and Em was on MTV all the time so Stan was still massive despite not getting radio play. It was HUGE WW too, and the brilliant video definitely helped.

He could always preface his performances of My Name Is, TRSS, WM with a "let's go way back in time" kind of thing. I think Cleaning Out My Closet would be the most likely song to be cut from his setlists. And I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be performing Crack a Bottle anymore.

I do think he could pull off songs like Kill You - just 'cause you're 50 doesn't mean you can't still be a murderer.

But yeah, the true Stadium Rockers are Lose Yourself, Stan, Not Afraid, Sing For the Moment, Til I Collapse, and The Way I Am (especially the way he starts it with the chorus now).

And maybe LTWYL.
