Em Interviewed in the book "The Tanning of America"

Postby Amaranthine » Sep 14th, '11, 14:38

From Paul's blog.
During those conversations Steve told me about the book he was writing and explained its premise: that hip-hop culture had so greatly affected American culture that it became part of the marketing language and attitude of the mainstream which eventually forced Corporate America to embrace it and ultimately utilize it. Eventually that obviously led to the topic of Eminem and his part in the process. Steve asked to interview Eminem about the subject, and the conversation appears in the book's epilogue. If you get the opportunity pick the book up. There's a very intelligent discussion and explanation of the theory of "tanning" as an American phenomenon that is sure to spark conversation.

If anybody can get the chance to pick up this book and type/scan Em's part, that would make a lot of people very happy.

The book as a whole, is it literally about people in America wanting to tan themselves to darken their skin, or is it about how the "black culture" has taken over the whole country in recent years.

The second part. He meant the tanning part to be a metaphor.

Thanks. That sounds interesting then (it would've been boring if it was about actual tanning for those who aren't young females lol). I do think hip hop played a big part in that.

The impact: That a white rapper, a dope white rapper, coming into the spotlight into a predominately black music genre/culture made way more white people like hip hop, & want to listen to it.

This is obvious. Em even acknowledges it in White America :y:. That's my take on it.

That's got nothing to do with music. I was referring to Em's remarkable singing talent displayed in YNO that MJ can't touch.
