He's a lot more interesting when he's comfortable, like the NPR interview, and here. As he doesn't feel pressure to be funny or goofy or whatever, he's just relaxed and kind of poetic, even in how he phrases some sentences, you can tell he has a knack for words.

No wonder his talking is so different(ie his detroit accent is completely gone). And this explains why his performances are so weird. He must've felt like he was performing for the first time again, hence why he rarely looks at the massive audience.
