Anyone else not completely in love with MMLP2?

Postby Corpse_Welder » Nov 9th, '13, 05:55

Let me start off with no disrespect to Eminem, but first couple listens I was elated and relieved to hear something so fresh yet familiar from Em. 10 or so listens later I decided to give it a break and spin MMLP, then back to 2 for a few spins then to TES, then the veil started to lift...something felt odd. Then I heard SSLP and I realized just how alienated I feel from this album. It's a great piece of work, but I guess...just not for me? Let me explain. I feel little personality here (all in my opinion, sad that I have to even mention that to pacify some), too many guest hooks and samples, and did Nate Reuss have to be autotuned? All this makes me feel like I'm trying to fall asleep and I start dreaming then something makes me jump awake again and realize exactly what's going on. I feel like it's a bit lifeless, although the emotion is behind it, it seems clinical. But my biggest problem so far is the lyrics, as I mentioned above. The punchlines just...make me cringe. And there are more and more every listen. I think the problem is the lyrics aren't thought provoking, not satirical, and that's ok because it's obviously what Em wants to do now. It's just not what I and many other fans grew to love in the first place. Old Em gave you a visceral reaction, made your neck hairs stand up and you weren't entirely positive if he was ever joking or not. I still give it an 80-85/100 as of right now but I'm not even sure I would put it above Relapse, let alone one of his classics like some have mentioned. And don't bring your hate bullshit in here, let's just discuss if you are also a bit underwhelmed so far

The hooks. Good album man, but if he'd had done the hooks himself I think I'd be able to enjoy it more

I love it.

Bad Guy, Rhyme or Reason, Rap God, Berzerk, Survival, Brainless, Evil Twin, Groundhog Day, Beautiful Pain, Headlights, Legacy, So Much Better are all very good songs in their own ways

I don't like it that much, the rapping is good but there are too many flaws on it

A few fillers, terrible hooks, a fair amount of bad lines, terrible beats

Let's not forget how many people had the same opinions of TES back in 2002 and now things are "the best since TES". Just give it time. This is a genre-bending album and because of that it won't adhere to a lot of the parameters previously set by the hip-hop culture. There are enough opinions to go around and suit anyone. Let's just give it time :)

I originally said it was better then Relapse but I don't think it is anymore. Definitely better then Recovery though and some of the songs are among his best post comeback.

I really like the album, but it does have flaws. His flow has a random pause to it now, and there's still a ton of corny lines. But I'm so glad he went away from the awful beats and screaming that he did on Recovery.

All the points you've made, as you so kindly pointed out, are subjective. I don't agree with you.
