Here's What's Being Overlooked about The Monster

The 2nd verse is an exceptionally strong Eminem verse. I think the voice distortion that occurs there is preventing some people from realizing that. Everything from "sometimes I wonder where these thoughts spawn from" to "and I can't conquer it" is extremely, extremely strong rapping.

Don't get me wrong, I'm baffled as to why this one couldn't be replaced by something like Don't Front or Baby (not really, because I know it's for commercial purposes). I'd rather Eminem never started cavorting with pop stars, and I'm even a fan of pop music. I don't think the song fits thematically into the album at all. They should've did this song, along with Survival, on some Refill-style addition to Recovery. That's where these songs fit sonically, not on MMLP2.

However, this isn't some shitty track. This isn't the greatest rapper of all time vomitting out a line as horrendous as "Maybe that's what happens when a TORRRnado meets a VOLLLcano ... walk aWAY THO!" This isn't that.

The hatred for the track is a little overdone, because the 2nd verse is really really sick material.

its not overlooked by me, i love the upbeatness and meaning in this song.. 3rd verse is also sick, the way he plays with the syllables on that verse and skips over beat, is pure dopeness

It's not awful, it's just not a stand out. Especially after you hear the bonuses and realize all of them could have been put on the album in place of The Monster and it would have made the album better.

The first time they hooked up seemed more organic.

"Oh shit, a collab with Rihanna? That came out of left field. Ohh it's about a physically abusive relationship. Wow, who better to get for that chorus? Alright Eminem, not bad. Not bad."

Then you see her name on the track list for this album.

"Really? Again? They did LTWYL and LTWYL2, is this really necessary? Well, it is called The Monster, maybe it's some dark shit."

Then you hear it.

"Okay, not exactly dark...uh, did this song absolutely have to be made?"

And then after you hear the bonus tracks it's like "okay they really didn't have to make this song and put it on the album."

It's not shitty but it's not great by any means. Weakest track from the album and it's still a decent song.

Nope, song is shitty. I'll take tornado/volcano/window pane lines over yodelling and a Katy Perry type hook any day. LTWYL isnt good either but its not nearly as bad.

The chorus was alright until the woo hoo oh hooohwowhow came in. And the beat is too poppy. But the verses are great. There's no need to call a song with great verses... 'trash'.
