Nah, their lyricism is enough to call this album one of the best of 2012 in rap music and i don't even give a fuck about that "compromise". These days 90% of mainstream albums sounds like this and production is GREAT on this album.
But the lyricism isn't even that good on it
For all the talk about them being amazing rappers... they all give very standard performances on here. The only verses that stick in my mind are a few Crooked I ones, and that's only for the odd line... most of the punchlines, humour attempts or attempts to sound clever are incredibly corny.
There's really nothing outstanding or original about hardly any of the verses, song concepts, hooks or anything. And you're right about 90% of mainstream rap albums sounding this way, that's the problem. But worse than that, it's not even cohesive / consistent on this album, it's just a huge mess. Try and think of a melody of one of the beats in your head...
Pretty hard right?
Where as, think of classic albums, think of 2001, think of the "Forgot About Dre" beat. Good production sticks in your mind and has a discernible style and tune to it; the beats on WTOH are like
Recovery - they're hugely noisy and over-produced, nothing memorable about them and they often ruin the song by crowding and drowning the vocals.
