How important are vocals to you?

Postby Slimm » Jun 21st, '11, 20:27

Just wondering how everyone here feels about vocals. A friend of mine can't listen to anything else but clean perfect soul like vocals. Personally I want vocals to be honest and with emotion, I like them real. There are some great musicians who have pretty fucked up voices, e.g. a Tom Waits or a Bob Dylan. I prefer them above the overproduced vocals heard in popmusic any day.

I also have a thing for unique voices, it can really turn music from good to outstanding. WU LYF's music kind of inspired this thread as well, seeing as how I can barely understand a word the singer is saying, while I can still feel the emotion and passion behind it.

Lyrics are very important to me, but as far as the vocals go, I can enjoy them if they're raw as well as polished. I'm not into screamo or any kind of music like that, but some crazy vocals done in a lyric centric way are much better to me then something generic like Fallout Boy or Simple Plan. The song Bury Me With It is a great example of what I'm talking about.

How about using the voice as an instrument? That way the focus is not on the lyrics but more on the emotion behind it. I'm not taking about black metal/death metal btw.

I love that kind of thing.

This chorus is a great example. Way more powerful than any words.
