One of my favorite albums of all time.

Most were already mentioned, probably forgetting loads

Bob Dylan: Blood on the Tracks, Time Out Of Mind
Randy Newman: Sail Away (Often writes songs from the point of view of killers, rapists, racists, bigots, etc. Some people got quite angry about it in the 70ies...)
R.E.M.: Automatic For The People
Joni Mitchell: Blue
Aimee Mann: Magnolia Soundtrack
Radiohead: OK Computer
The Velvet Underground and Nico: The Velvet Underground and Nico
Sam Cooke: Night Beat
Leonard Cohen: Songs of Love and Hate
Robert Johnson: The Complete Recordings (He sounds like a ghost...)
Madonna: Ray Of Light (yes, yes, fake hippie shit, still a great album IMO...)
Pulp: Different Class
Marvin Gaye: What's Going On
Smashing Pumpkins: Disarm
Sly & The Family Stone: Stand!
Coldplay: A Rush of Blood to the Head
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds: No More Shall We Part
The Temptations: Anthology (They had brilliant hits, a hits compilation makes perfect sense here IMO)
Depeche Mode: Violator
Patti Smith: Easter
