Gervais actually... Made a very relevant and resonant point, albeit in Extras (his sitcom) in his infamous 'fame speech' at the end of the Xmas special:

Wonderful finale speech on celebrity / fame etc.

For anybody who hasn't seen that, doesn't like Gervais / know who he is... Whatever - I urge you to watch that clip anyway. It's pure poetry. Anyway, what he says about shows like X-Factor is basically how, in the early rounds they wheel out the bewildered to be sniggered at by multi-millionaires.

Which when you hear it put like that, pretty much makes the whole thing seem so much more cruel and strange.
