I Remember, most devastating diss track of all-time

Postby EminemInsider » Mar 4th, '12, 03:13

I'll just focus on the rap verse for now:

"Remember back in 94
Like right before
Ms. Everlast was Whitey Ford
Before his heart attack had him on life support"

Right away, we see one of the themes of this verse that Eminem shows us, rather than just telling us - that being the identity crisis Everlast has seemingly had throughout his life if you look at his career path. Here we have the reference to his name change, which came before his heart problems, so there's no "he had a life-altering experience" reason to be given for the Princesque maneuver.

"When House of Pain was out of fame
Like someone doused the flame
And they became destined to never "Jump Around" again"

And Eminem gives the REAL reason for Everlast having gone in a different direction with his music.

"Or even further back
When I first had heard "The Knack"
When you were down with Syndicate
I went to get your shit, man, I was into it
But then you went and took your style and switched the shit
Now you sound ridiculous, you dickless piece of shit"

Eminem tells him flat-out that Everlast used to be good, and now he sucks. It's that "coming from a fan perspective"...similar to Jay-Z going after Nas that way on Takeover. He's telling Everlast that he was on the right track before, but he gave up on hip hop and is now a desperate piece of shit.

"How could you diss me, bitch?
I liked you, thought you was all right for a white dude
Remember Sway & Tech when I came up and sat beside you
Started rhymin and you left the room and didn't say goodbye or nothin
Like you mad that someone else was white and tryin'a rhyme or somethin"

A personal anecdote. We have no way of knowing whether this really happened or not, but it makes Everlast look like a jealous pussy.

"I'm sorry man, I wasn't tryin'a steal your light or nothin'
But you're a homosexual white rappin Irish Muslim
Man I wish I was Irish, I could be a Muslim too
Then I'd be confused as you, and I wouldn't know what to do"

Perhaps the sneakiest bars in the entire song. The reference to Everlast having obviously converted to Islam...this fits right in with the implication Everlast has been living with an identity crisis. He changed his name, he changed his musical style, and he even changed his religion. Why else would he diss someone who could....

"What's up with you, I never fucked with you, why would you fuck with me?
Knowin I could rap circles around you, what, you nuts as me?"

It doesn't make any sense for Everlast to diss a REAL rapper after he'd "moved on" to different music...unless he had lingering resentment, that is. Because, as Eminem said, he'd "never fucked with him."

"Plus I can sing better than you, and I don't fuckin sing
And probably play guitar better, and I ain't never touched a string"

Eminem just rubbing in how talentless Everlast is, as he's already demonstrated in the song that even in terms of singing ability between the two of them, it's at least debatable.

"But I ain't mad at you, I'd hate me too if I was you
I'm what you used to be, shit you was me in 92
So every time I write a lyric I'ma think of you
And maybe that'll help me know what it's like to sing the blues..."

And we finish up with 4 of the most deceptively cold, menacing lines you'll ever see. The current superstar tells the old, washed-up, neverwas that he's washed-up, never was, and he blew it. And then he ties that all in with Everlast's current music, singing the last line in the same melody as the "What It's Like" chorus that it's parodying...so now there's a parallel we can see between Everlast and the "down on their luck" characters he sang about in the song.

All of this in a song where he hilariously mocks Everlast's new music style, references the latter's falling out with Ice-T, and then concludes by making Everlast look like even more of a pussy by daring him to actually say his fucking name in a song. It made Everlast so angry that he challenged Eminem to a fight over it.

tl;dr: I Remember is the GOAT diss track because Eminem picks him apart with incisive observations about his career and the probable psychological motives behind his actions.
Canning: What will it say on your tombstone?
Charlie Sheen: Something dot com.

Em's psychological analysis of his opponents always impresses me, it's what makes his insults so potent.

Who produced it? I just realized I don't know who produced like 99% of Em diss tracks.
