It's pretty simple.

He made a few albums worth of Relapse type songs. Planned to release 2 Relapse albums
Released Relapse
Had a few recording sessions, , including Hawaii session (On Fire, So Bad etc), and met with other producers
Decided to not release Relapse 2 and make Recovery (few songs already made in that direction)
Released an EP (Refill) of some R2 songs to tide fans over
Released Recovery

Done.

Well he recorded in 2010 for Recovery as well, otherwise it wouldn't have come out in June, it woulda come out much earlier.

I think that's probably true (about that freestyle verse being from Relapse 2).

Which is why it annoys me so much. Because between that verse and "Buffalo Bill"...

To be honest though.. The rest of refill was pretty average. I've said from the very beginning he shiuld have released it as a double album. I wonder why he didn't. Also, I wonder what song he planned to use as the lead single from R2. That's a song we definitely haven't heard.

Saddest thing is a handful of people actually heard the 100+ tracks from the relapse sessions and could quite possibly have them sitting on their iPods.

Okay guys can we get something cleared up here? People say he changed directions while recording R2 (which came songs like On Fire & Cocaine POSSIBLY) and eventually it changed so much that he decided to scrap the idea of Relapse 2 and move onto Recovery. Now why oh why would he change directions while recording Relapse 2 when Relapse 2 was just supposed to be songs from the same 2008-2009 sessions that Relapse 1 came from? There was no change in direction, Relapse 2 was already recorded! The entire point of Relapse 2 was to bring more music for the fans from the sessions that Relapse 1 came from. He obviously planned to cancel Relapse 2 so that he could record a new album, and planned to never release a second Relapse.

No. I agree there was no change in direction. But I think he planned to release Relapse 2.

He had ALL (1 and 2) the material recorded.

But then Relapse got a mixed reception and so he compromised and made new material.

It's pretty obvious that he couldn't handle the mixed reception, despite saying he was gonna just do what he wanted and fuck everybody now etc.

He then got the hottest producers, some big hooks and made introspective, emotional, rock-tinged pop-rap ala "Beautiful" (best received track from Relapse, broadly).

They followed the "Beautiful" route when fans didn't like the new stuff.

I dont know. He should really consider releasing that album though, if it exists in some form.
Just call it Relaspe 2, The Trashcan. With the album cover featuring Eminem pulling shit out of a stinking trashcan out in the street.
