Kendrick doesn't have thousands of critics on his shoulders yapping at him, ordering him to make his album sound a certain way. I understand a lot of pressure was placed on Kendrick for his debut album but, he could have released an average album and still received a lot of praise.
I don't think Em's scared of the mainstream criticism, he's just trying too hard to beat other rappers in areas where they excel the most. The constant puns he's been throwing around is just him seeking attention, basically saying, "Hey, look at me! I'm Eminem, I can rap REALLY good AND throw some awesome puns in there!"
So, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that comparing Kendrick and Eminem was a bad idea considering Kendrick is fresh in the game and people are always looking for someone that sticks to their "roots." We have no idea if in a few years Kendrick will start compromising to maintain mainstream appeal.
Honestly, Em just ruined his entire image by saying "fuck Relapse" and all that stuff. It was his moment to reintroduce himself to the world but instead of reintroducing himself he reinvented his entire style and became this new, "nice Eminem."
I'm sure deep down he still does not give a fuck and could probably come out with an album full of material that he was feeling, but I believe it's entirely up to not whether the fans/critics will like it, but will it put him in the spotlight. He just comes off as a rapper that needs the attention, he doesn't want to be broadcasted as just "another rapper."
So...could Kendrick influence him? Definitely. I'm pretty sure they've been talking in the studio and probably recorded something together. But, I believe it's truly down to, "Will this material put me in the spotlight?"
I feel like I've gone sort of off-topic.
