Yeah... "Survival" feels like... BET Cypher meets "Cinderella Man"...
That BET Cypher style was just about perfect... he didn't make the entire flow a yell; he just utilized it as a tool in his toolBOX(es!!!)!!... but I think contrast is what creates pleasure to the ears... which is why this and the BET Cypher sound so much better...
"25 to Life" for example sounds like one steroid-infused-rant... almost all one tone of anger...
Where as the Cypher and this style... goes more up and down, but... when he was experimenting with the whisper to loud during his 012 live shit etc... "Survival" just feels like more of a mastery of all these elements; it's like he's taken the yelling, the contrast of quiet to loud, the tongue-twisty delivery now and then and just created a really beautiful balance...
AND,the fucking production is sorted. Even if this shit isn't MMLP hardcore funk genius, even if there's the ocassional cheesy guitar sample or predictable anthemic beat... there's no shitty drums and it's stripped down and his vocals sound loud and clear and crisp as you said.
Whilst I agree that it feels slightly toooo Recovery-ish in a way... it's like he's taken all the best elements, fixed all the shit elements... and... I think perhaps he just spent ages doing this, just really patching up, obsessing and trying to create the perfect style...
And I know I may get bashed for saying this but right now at least, I actually find this rap style more satisfying than TES. TES is still his best album, and is amazing, but as much as people dislike new aspects of his new styles... one thing he's taken to whole new levels is precision and pronunciation and delivery... he sounds like a voice artist now or something... Recovery sounded a bit too abrasive though, but he has smooth tones in his voice on "Survival" it's a spot-on balance...
Like, as I listen... the contrast between smooth, harsh, the humour, the cockiness, the tongue-twisting rhyming... I just think this is REALLY good signs for this fucking album.
The way he says like "if there should ever come a time when my... " in a relaxed/casual way as if going off the flow/rhyme scheme then yells "LIFE'S IN A RUT!" almost like a surprise delivery back on track of that flow/style to carry it on is so satisfying and just cool, because on like Recovery he'd have just said the whole thing more down-the-line... this slightly evolved style has more variety and playful elements and ways in which he's trying to catch you off-guard a lot... if this kind of focus on every element carries throughout and this is 'light work' as Porter said... then my god, I think this may become his most addictive work yet to me. This may even top my Relapse addiction yo.
If this shit isn't a classic, then holy fuck he should give up because how the fuck can you be this good right now (in terms of his skill and passion) and fail the third time round.
Way more hyped for this album now.
