Well obviously Em is one of the most sarcastic rappers ever.
He changes his sound so much and delivery / how it's all presented can be like 90% of it I think... but just listen to MMLP... he one sharp, self-deprecating mother fucker...
Obviously he knows the puns are corny, but I think he also thinks they're kinda clever and uses his sarcastic persona / way he does it as a bit of an excuse to say them...
"Excuse the corny metaphor"...
He knows puns are corny... but I don't think Recovery puns were purposely badly formatted no. I think he hadn't done them for years and years and literally practiced in front of us and went from terrible-decent... as the puns on Recovery, at times, are ABYSMAL. Not even just corny actual puns but the way he writes up to them defeats the object of the pun at times, as he literally just explains it lmao... He writes his way out of a fucking paper bag to get to one simple line...
I don't think THAT was intentional, I think he was just bad at them when he started to try do them in such an abundant way to fit in with the recent pun-heavy era of rap.
Because he has improved IMMENSELY since then; his "Richard" and "C'mon Leme Ride" puns are dope, and his transitions in to them are 110% smoother / integral to the line / not overwritten.
But obviously the guy who wrote "Criminal" doesn't truly think "calm batman" is funny or truly witty... but I think he was kind of proud of himself for figuring it out, I think he was just trying to add his punchlines to the pot and take the piss out of himself / the puns as he did it aka "GET IT!?" BUT... he delivers everything so seriously and one-toned on Recovery that this is potentially lost for the most part and sounds like he's rapping utter cringe that he thinks is genius.
Because seriously, to deliver that 'window pain' line at the end of a verse... there's just no excusing that. Even if it was mixed in mid-verse, but to end a verse on it like it's poignant, on quite a darkly, otherwise-poetic, and very realistic, great song on a dark subject... there's just no need for puns in that setting. He didn't use any on "Space Bound" did he?... he needs to learn when they're needed and when they're not, like he did there lmao. As LTWYL didn't need ANY puns.
