Yeah I remember everyone coming out of the woodworks to have there say on Em making fun of MJ, like Stevie Wonder and even MJ himself. So celebrity wise I would say Encore was very controversial.
MMLP obviously pissed off a lot of people, gay rights groups mainly. Relapse wasn't really shocking.....it was detailed and gruesome etc but not specfically about anyone for the most part. I don't even remember hearing anything about Britney/Lindsay's responses to Same Song and Dance.
IMO:
SSLP-Because people hadn't heard anything like it before
MMLP- Because it was SSLP on steroids and taking shots at everything
TES- The political songs and the whole 'White America' talk and censorship
Encore- MJ stuff mainly and Mosh
Relapse- This is where it had fizzled out really not much controversy
Recovery- None really, wasn't attempting to either
So I think he has pretty much gotten less controversial as time goes on but MMLP was the most controversial but SSLP had even more shock value I think. I don't remember the time around SSLP release as I was 8 or something but from MMLP onwards I remember a lot of drama.
